In a remarkable turn of events, Mortal Kombat 1, launched in September 2023, has surpassed the sales milestone of 5 million copies, marking an uptick from the previously reported 4 million units back in August 2024.
As a devoted Mortal Kombat fan, I couldn’t help but share the excitement when Ed Boon, the series co-creator and game director, announced that our beloved Mortal Kombat 1 ranked among the top 15 most-played PlayStation 5 games in the U.S. from December 14, 2024, to January 4, 2025! Although the specific numbers weren’t revealed, it’s still impressive that it came close to outshining other popular titles. Interestingly enough, during the week ending December 21st, Mortal Kombat was overshadowed by Sonic Frontiers – a surge I believe is directly linked to its addition to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on December 17th.
Although the Khaos Reigns expansion posted strong sales numbers, it’s been suggested that its performance fell short of expectations. This apparently resulted in the cancellation of Kombat Pack 3 and a planned second story expansion.
Mortal Kombat 1 can be played on various devices like Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, personal computers, and Nintendo Switch. Those who possess Kombat Pack 2 and Khaos Reigns add-ons have been granted early access to Conan the Barbarian character. A broader release for everyone is planned for January 28th.
Having sold more than 5 million units, it’s heartening to see Mortal Kombat 1 ranking among the top 15 most popular PlayStation 5 games. We owe this success to the dedicated Mortal Kombat community and appreciate your ongoing support for NetherRealm Studios!

Compared to previous versions, the sales of Mortal Kombat 1 have been particularly impressive. For instance, Mortal Kombat 11, launched in 2019, managed to sell more than 15 million copies by October 2022, whereas Mortal Kombat X sold over 12 million units by March 2019. To date, the entire Mortal Kombat franchise has garnered global sales of over 80 million units.
The game’s popularity is reinforced by its prominent availability on the PlayStation 5 console, consistently ranking high in the list of popular games over the holidays. This suggests that gamers continue to show enthusiasm and commitment towards playing it.
Nevertheless, the perceived poor performance of the Khaos Reigns expansion underscores the difficulties in consistently satisfying player expectations, even within well-established gaming franchises. Maintaining a balance between providing top-quality content and keeping players engaged is vital for continued triumph.
In the future, introducing characters such as Conan the Barbarian is planned to renew player engagement and provide novel gaming experiences. It’ll be intriguing to observe the effects of these new elements on the game’s appeal and revenue over the next few months.
