Three years ago, singer Morrissey and his record label, Capitol, ended their working relationship. Capitol didn’t appear likely to ever release Morrissey’s completed album, Bonfire of Teenagers, which included collaborations with Iggy Pop and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers – Chad Smith and Flea. Some speculate that Morrissey’s political views may have been a factor in the decision.
It’s complicated. Morrissey has rejected claims he supports far-right ideologies, which some say led to his departure from his record label, but he insists that’s not true. For those familiar with his career since the 1980s, it’s clear things are often not what they seem. Conflicting stories emerge, leaving it up to the listener to decide what to believe.
Ultimately, Morrissey has consistently created quality music, even with gaps between releases. His last album, I am Not a Dog on a Chain, came out in 2020, and it’s been quiet since then. It’s unclear whether the delay is due to Morrissey himself or his former record label, Capitol. However, with Capitol no longer involved and Sire Records now handling things, we should soon learn what’s been happening.
Morrissey appears to have found a new home to release his music
The famous singer recently posted a mysterious image on Instagram: the logo for Sire Records. He didn’t include any text or make an official statement about joining the label, which has previously released music from artists like Depeche Mode and the Smiths.
According to Rolling Stone, Morrissey had reportedly signed a deal, but it wasn’t confirmed. It’s unclear whether the magazine had inside information or was just reporting on a post Morrissey made himself.
This could be a positive development for Morrissey’s fans. While some may disagree with his political opinions, his songs have always connected with people who feel isolated and lonely. He has a special ability to find hope within sadness – a rare gift from a truly unique artist.
The singer has completed two albums that are ready to be released. One is the collaboration with Iggy Pop and Flea, and the other is titled You’re Right, It’s Time. He’s already performed some of these songs in concert, and continues to be a dynamic performer live, except when health issues or reported threats force him to cancel shows.
Ideally, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the former guitarist for The Smiths, would resolve their issues and make new music together. However, that’s probably not going to happen.
