Morgan Freeman has always loved classic movies and the actors in them. He told Rotten Tomatoes in a 2011 interview about some of his favorite films and the performers who’ve influenced him over the years.
He named five of his favorite movies: King Kong (directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack), High Noon by Fred Zinnemann, The Outlaw Josey Wales starring Clint Eastwood, and Moulin Rouge! directed by Baz Luhrmann.
When asked to name his fifth favorite movie, Freeman thought for a moment and then said, “Oh, that’s right – Moby Dick!” The 1956 film, based on Herman Melville’s novel, follows a sailor’s quest to hunt a massive white whale, and Freeman complimented the film’s high-quality production.
He praised the film, saying, “That was real filmmaking, like something John Huston would do.” He then jokingly referenced the beginning of Moby-Dick, adding, “Call me… Ishmael.” He explained that he rarely enjoys a movie adaptation as much as the book itself, but this one was an exception.
Morgan Freeman shared that the film holds a special place in his heart because it stars Gregory Peck, one of his favorite actors of all time. He considers Peck alongside Gary Cooper and Humphrey Bogart to be among the greatest performers ever. “Gregory Peck was one of my favorites, along with Gary Cooper and Humphrey Bogart,” Freeman explained.
Each actor Freeman talked about made a significant impact on Hollywood. Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his performance in To Kill a Mockingbird, Humphrey Bogart became a legend through films like Casablanca and The African Queen, and Gary Cooper is best known for iconic westerns like High Noon.
Freeman consistently chooses movies with both compelling stories and impressive acting. His appreciation for these performers highlights how classic Hollywood continues to influence modern filmmaking.
