Nintendo’s foray into filmmaking seems promising, with signs suggesting that there’s even more to come. If you’re a fan eagerly anticipating glimpses of your beloved video game realms on the silver screen, it may not be much longer before your dreams are realized.
At Nintendo’s latest question-and-answer event during their annual gathering, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, revealed some thrilling updates about future projects. This information, translated and made public, has allowed fans a sneak peek into Nintendo’s plans for creating movies based on their cherished video games.
When questioned about future films beyond Mario and Zelda, Furukawa replied, “We debuted The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters in April 2023, and it’s been well-received globally. Moving forward, we intend to launch a new animated film set in the Super Mario Bros. universe in April 2026, followed by a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda in May 2027.
Instead of merely giving permission for their characters to be used by any studio, Nintendo takes an active role in the production process, investing when necessary, to ensure the end product remains of high quality. This was clarified by Furukawa.
Although specifics remain undisclosed, Furukawa has affirmed that additional projects are being developed, although they’re not yet prepared to be revealed. As of now, it’s been disclosed that both Mario and Zelda will appear in future releases, but this isn’t the whole tale.
One major point of discussion centers around the world of Pokémon, however, this expansive universe has already been explored through its own extended animation and movie ventures independently. It’s unlikely that Nintendo will be directing any Pokémon films, which opens up an opportunity for other video game franchises to shine.
Furukawa emphasized that Nintendo isn’t hurrying the release of low-cost game-to-film adaptations. Instead, they are committed to producing top-notch movies that enthusiasts will genuinely appreciate. In other words, he stated that they are working on different projects, which was enough to excite fans.
As a new Mario animated feature film arrives in 2026, followed by a live-action Legend of Zelda movie in 2027, Nintendo is gradually constructing its cinematic universe, sparking curiosity among viewers. If the production maintains its quality and fans remain engaged, it appears that Nintendo’s foray into big-screen storytelling is just getting started.
