As a dedicated follower of true crime stories and a connoisseur of Ryan Murphy’s gripping narratives, I am beyond excited for the upcoming season of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. The trailer has already sent chills down my spine with its haunting portrayal of the Menéndez family’s twisted dynamics, and I can’t wait to delve deeper into this dark tale.
In a new installment of his true crime series, Monsters, Ryan Murphy returns with the tale of the Menendez brothers. The trailer for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story offers a spine-tingling peek into the dark and disturbing life of the Menendez family prior to the brutal murders of José (portrayed by Javier Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), committed by their sons.
Actors Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch will portray the Menéndez brothers, Lyle and Erik, in a new production. The teaser suggests an intriguing dual nature within their family, as they seem harmonious on the surface but harbor hidden, sinister secrets amongst them.
In a straightforward manner, Kitty inquires about the situation with her and the boys, to which José asks for clarification. Kitty expresses her discomfort with any further deception existing between them, assuring him that she will keep their secret confidential.
At the end of the trailer, we see the siblings embracing, bare-chested, with one saying, “It’s just us two now. We stand alone,” in a voiceover. The scene concludes with a gunshot echoing. The Menendez brothers were found guilty of murder and given life sentences without the possibility of parole. The prosecution alleged they committed the act for financial gain, but the brothers maintained that their parents were abusive in every sense – physically, sexually, and emotionally.
2017 saw me sharing insights with Dateline, and during that conversation, Lyle shed light on an unusual aspect of their story: the media attention it garnered due to the brothers murdering their parents for financial gain. He explained, “Each year, approximately 200-300 cases of parricide occur where a child takes the life of a parent. The vast majority of these tragedies are linked to abuse.”
Nevertheless, their residence in Beverly Hills and their father’s affluence made it easy for the media to manipulate the storyline. He felt that it was more marketable to sensationalize the idea that “these siblings murdered out of greed.”
This series is the second part of Murphy’s collection that explores fictional re-enactments of real crime stories. The initial season delved into the chilling tale of Jeffrey Dahmer (played by Evan Peters), a notorious serial killer, often referred to as the Milwaukee Cannibal, and his hapless victims. Despite its intense and graphic depiction, the show garnered numerous accolades, including 13 Emmy nominations.
In simpler terms, Niecy Nash-Betts received an award as the best supporting actress, recognized for her role depicting a neighbor of Glenda Cleveland Dahmer who alerted authorities about the man’s potential danger long before his arrest.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will premiere on Netflix on September 19.
