Monsters Star Ari Graynor Felt ‘Deeply Connected’ To Attorney Leslie Abramson Whom She Portrayed In The Series; Here’s Why

As a fervent admirer of captivating true-crime narratives and the extraordinary individuals who navigate their complexities, I found myself deeply engrossed in Ryan Murphy’s latest addition to his crime anthology series, Monsters, based on the Menendez brothers’ chilling story. Ari Graynor’s portrayal of Leslie Abramson, a defense attorney who handled such a contentious case without ever meeting her in real life, was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Following its success with the miniseries Dahmer on Netflix, Ryan Murphy’s crime anthology series added another chapter with Monsters, inspired by real events surrounding the Menendez brothers, who were imprisoned for brutally murdering their parents. Initially, the case appeared straightforward, but allegations of sexual, mental, and physical abuse against the accused by their victims brought a fresh perspective to it.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say, “I found myself captivated by Ari Graynor’s portrayal of attorney Leslie Abramson in our recent project. In real life, she maintained a distance from me, as it seems Leslie has made it clear that she prefers not to discuss her cases. The case that brought her into the spotlight was undeniably sensational, but for her, it was a source of pain and thus, she refrained from giving interviews or statements about it to the press.

Despite not engaging extensively with the media, Graynor stated that she was always straightforward when discussing “the impact of media on various matters.” Abramson’s only public exposure occurred when she published her memoir, The Defense Is Ready: Life in the Trenches of Criminal Law, in 1997. Now, at 80 years old, she has retired and seldom makes public appearances.

Despite not having a personal relationship with the attorney’s character in real life, the actress found herself forming a remote bond and profound admiration towards her while working on The Sopranos. She expressed her feelings by saying, “I have such a strong connection to her, it’s as if I’ve fallen in love from afar.” For her, portraying this character was largely about ensuring she did justice to the attorney’s story.

Graynor disclosed that she had attempted to contact her via email and sought connections who could facilitate communication, with the aim of letting her know about her impact on Graynor and expressing her willingness to chat if she was interested.

As stated by the actress, it’s her belief that the Menendez brothers’ case should be revisited with the intention of releasing them from prison. She feels that another opportunity would allow them to live purposeful lives and significantly benefit society. Throughout her comments, she emphasized the brothers’ exceptional nature and expressed a desire to embrace them someday.
