Scientists at Miramax have been secretly developing a spooky idea, and it turns out they’re adapting an existing work. The studio is creating an animated movie based on Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s famous 1962 Halloween song, “Monster Mash.”
Miramax has secured the rights to the classic song “Monster Mash,” originally reported by Deadline. Though not explicitly about Halloween, Bobby Pickett’s song (co-written with Lenny Capizzi) is a staple of Halloween playlists – it’s actually a song about a song! Miramax plans to turn “Monster Mash” into a movie centered around the Halloween season, as confirmed by Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman.
For over 60 years, the song ‘Monster Mash’ has been synonymous with Halloween. We’re excited to work with the Pickett and Capizzi families and Reservoir Media to transform this classic tune into an animated musical that everyone can enjoy. The project honors the original song’s playful energy and is designed to become a long-lasting Halloween favorite.”
Currently, no one is working on the project. However, the scriptwriter will have the opportunity to explore some interesting ideas inspired by the song, such as whether Dracula turned his son into a vampire or if the son was born that way. Plus, we might finally get to hear the song’s famous “Transylvania Twist” with an original musical score.
Whether or not “Monster Mash” will become a movie remains to be seen. There have been previous attempts to adapt the song for the big screen, but hopefully, this latest effort will succeed. The team behind it aims to create a fun, Halloween-themed movie inspired by a song that, surprisingly, wasn’t originally about the holiday.
