Despite Monster Hunter Rise enjoying a robust launch following its release in late February, with over 10 million sales achieved in less than three months, the pace of success has noticeably decreased for this action role-playing game. Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto offers an intriguing possible explanation.
Towards the end of July, we shared that the sales of Monster Hunter Wilds declined significantly, from millions to less than half a million units within just a few months. We also pointed out the declining Steam review scores for the game, which were primarily due to suboptimal PC performance (an ongoing problem as reported by players, unfortunately). However, this might not be the only explanation behind the recent drop in sales of the Monster Hunter series or the lack of enthusiasm among long-time fans to try it out.
Haruhiro Tsujimoto, head at Capcom, hinted in an interview with Nikkei (translated by Automaton) that the high price of Sony’s PlayStation 5 could be a contributing factor. Considering additional accessories, monthly subscriptions like PlayStation Plus for online play (essential for games like Monster Hunter Wilds), and naturally, the console itself, the total cost for owning a PS5 can reach close to $700 for users.
Considering Monster Hunter Wilds’ initial cost of $70, the total expense becomes higher, and Tsujimoto suggests this may be why sales haven’t reached their potential. Interestingly, you can opt for one of the classic Monster Hunter games like Monster Hunter World, which offers around 400 hours of content at its full price of $29.99 or even as low as $9.89 during discounts.
