Okay, so everyone was super hyped for Monster Hunter Wilds – it was the biggest thing at Gamescom last year, and tons of people added it to their Steam wishlists. When it finally launched, we had almost 1.4 million of us playing at the same time! But honestly, it’s not selling as well as the last Monster Hunter game, even though that one came out four years ago. It’s a bit surprising, considering all the buzz!
Capcom recently released its financial report for the first half of the fiscal year (April to September), as reported by Eurogamer.
Looking at the best-selling games from that period, Monster Hunter Wilds is just making the top 10, with 637,000 units sold. While that’s still a respectable number, it’s a little surprising considering the previous game, Monster Hunter Rise, sold slightly more with 643,000 units.
It’s surprising to see Rise performing better than Wilds, but Wilds’ difficulties aren’t a total shock. The game still has a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam, mainly because of its poor performance. Even after eight months, it still runs badly on many computers, even powerful ones, making it hard to play smoothly.

The game’s difficulty has been a consistent point of discussion. When it first launched, many players found it too easy. But after the recent, very challenging Omega Planetes fight from the Final Fantasy 14 collaboration, the game now feels overly difficult. Ideally, a more gradual increase in difficulty would have been preferable.
Those factors, along with the typical slowdown in sales after a game launches and before new content is released, likely caused Wilds to sell fewer copies than other games on this list. For instance, Street Fighter 6, released two years prior, sold one million more copies during the same period.
One of the biggest surprises is that Devil May Cry is the top-selling game, with over two million copies sold, bringing its total lifetime sales to over 10 million. The numbers include the Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, which was released almost five years ago, making its continued popularity noteworthy.

It’s no surprise that the Resident Evil series continues to perform well. Resident Evil: Village sold 1.5 million copies in the first half of the year, with Resident Evil 4 and 7 also proving popular. Resident Evil 2 sold almost as many copies as Street Fighter 6, and Resident Evil 3 slightly outsold both Monster Hunter titles.
Even though Monster Hunter Wilds hasn’t reached the sales numbers of its predecessors – it’s currently over 10 million, compared to 17 million for Rise and nearly 30 million for World – I’m confident it can see a significant increase in sales. A major performance update, especially if released before a large expansion, would likely boost its popularity.
