Back in the ’90s indie music scene, Babybird’s “You’re Gorgeous” was a love song that captured hearts – or so it seemed. But upon closer listen, it’s far from romantic. The catchy chorus, “Because you’re gorgeous/I’ll do anything for you,” hides a more complex story about a photographer exploiting his models. Yet, the song’s enduring popularity can be attributed to the raw truth in its chorus, and I found myself resonating with that sentiment while immersed in Monster Hunter Worlds.
The character customization feature in Monster Hunter Wilds stands out. While it might not be as complex as some others, it boasts a key strength shared by top-tier character creators: it allows you to craft stunningly beautiful characters. Once a character is breathtaking, I’m willing to go the extra mile for them. The ability to design appealing characters is a significant contributor to Mecha Break’s appeal, and if Wilds manages to win me over completely, Lena the Hunter will deserve some credit for it.
A Good Character Creator Makes You Want To Keep Playing
My connection with Monster Hunter is quite typical. I joined the series with World, like many others did, but struggled to adapt, much like many others did too. I gave it another go with Rise and the story repeated itself. Wilds might make it three times, but the word that Wilds offers a more casual-friendly experience has me optimistic that this time it could be permanent. It may not deliver the ‘authentic’ Monster Hunter experience, but the slight alteration could potentially be what finally pulls me in.
As a dedicated gamer, the characters I connect with significantly impact my gaming experience. I find it harder to abandon a game when I’m emotionally invested in a character. Although the narrative can inspire this connection, designing and becoming attached to a character I can be proud of is equally important. This sense of camaraderie drives me to stick with them throughout their journey, whether that ending is signaled by credits or a more literal conclusion.
Contrastingly, in Avowed, my character, the stunning Caoimhe, had striking blue eyes that I customized initially. However, as the game progressed, her Godlike features overshadowed those beautiful blue eyes for about 60 hours, leaving me feeling detached from my own creation.
So far, I’ve completed only a few quests and am still exploring World and Rise. It’s premature to predict where Wilds will eventually stand in terms of overall quality. However, on its own, I find the game quite enjoyable, and having Suds the Palico, who resembles Suds McDuff and is a foamy ginger beer color, as my companion makes the experience even better. Additionally, interacting with characters who seem to have significant roles in the story rather than just serving as tutorial guides is a plus. Monster Hunter Wilds initially piqued my curiosity, but now it seems to be holding my interest.
Monster Hunter’s Hair Is Terrific

It turns out that Lena wasn’t my original plan; I don’t usually design characters that resemble me. Instead, I prefer to experiment with different options by browsing through the presets and seeing what feels right. However, since the Monster Hunter Wilds community is known for importing characters, I thought about following suit. Interestingly, I didn’t find any Taylor Swift character shared, as it’s common in character creators. But there was a Beth Harmon that bore an uncanny resemblance, which I could either borrow or use as a starting point.
Initially, I opted to customize my character directly instead of using pre-made ones. While having an aesthetically pleasing character is nice, the real joy lies in adjusting various settings using the sliders. Unfortunately, importing a character skips this enjoyable process. Among the Monster Hunter Wilds characters, I found many that were visually appealing, but it wasn’t until I stumbled upon the slicked-back long hairstyle that things began to take shape. This is why I always start with the hair first. The default character didn’t quite fit the bill, so I tried a few more before finding one with the appropriate skin tone for my desired hair color. I added some sparkle to the hairdo, green eyes, dark lips, and spent time fiddling with unfamiliar sliders later on, resulting in Lena being ready for action.
It’s uncertain if I can conquer Monster Hunter Wilds, given that major game releases keep pouring in without a let-up. I’ve got to revisit Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii soon, and with Infinite Wealth being my Game of the Year last year, I anticipate greatness. However, regardless of how MHW turns out, one unforgettable experience will be Lena’s. When times get tough, she motivates me to persevere. She’s stunningly beautiful, and I’d go to any lengths for her.
