Capcom’s unveiling of the Rompopolo beastie in Monster Hunter Wilds sparked reactions from fans, with some commenting that the oily brute wyvern was so unsettling they wanted to hunt it until it was no more. However, director Yuya Tokuda responded by suggesting that these comments were harsh and stated that many people actually find the slimy creature “adorable,” as a matter of fact.
If I had the opportunity to converse with Tokuda lately, I would inquire if his response suggests that Capcom has succeeded – Monster Hunter being a franchise centered around monster hunting. Upon given the opportunity to respond, Tokuda acknowledges this, however, he notes that the reaction is more complex than just that.
He expresses, “Many find Rompopolo adorable, I simply wanted to mention!” he shares. “As we’ve noticed, for every individual eager to eliminate it upon the game’s release, there are numerous others who view it as cool or endearing. In fact, some fans have been creating charming fan art of it.
The designers are thrilled with the response they’ve received – they find it both stylish and adorable. This reaction, however, varies among people. I believe that for a monster to stand out so much from previous games, sparking such diverse conversations on multiple levels, is undeniably a testament to our design objectives being met.
To be fair, the remarkable Rompopolo isn’t the sole exceptional newcomer in Monster Hunter Wilds. Not too long ago, we caught a glimpse of an oil-slicked octopus that bursts into flames – quite a spectacle! It’s no surprise that Tokuda is “incredibly proud.
Monster Hunter Wilds is out February 28, and we can’t wait.
