According to Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, a significant factor contributing to Monster Hunter Rise’s impressive sales numbers is its enhanced emphasis on narrative.
Monster Hunter Wildfire has been a massive hit for Capcom, selling 8 million copies within its first three days and breaking records as their fastest-selling game ever. Although it was expected to perform well due to the popularity of ‘Monster Hunter’ in its title (World and Rise are currently Capcom’s top two best-sellers), Monster Hunter Wildfire surpassed expectations by selling 5 million copies within the same timeframe. Ryozo Tsujimoto, the series producer, attributes some of its success to the greater emphasis on storyline.
In conversation with The Nikkei (translated), Tsujimoto explained that the success of Monster Hunter Wilds could be attributed to their focus on developing a compelling narrative and enhancing immersion through voice acting. He further suggested that players were able to connect with the world of Monster Hunter by understanding how other characters in this universe perceive hunters and what thoughts might cross their minds.
In contrast to other games in the Monster Hunter series, Wilds is known for its extensive plot, but it hasn’t been universally liked among fans. Some gamers have criticized the story as overly scripted and guide-heavy, particularly during the walk-and-talk scenes. However, many players have praised the characters, such as Rove and Gemma. There seems to be a consensus that the build-up to Low Rank’s final boss is exceptional.
While the story deserves some recognition, Tsujimoto also highlights another significant factor behind Wilds’ success in an interview. He suggests that Capcom allowing link play between various game consoles played a crucial role. This is unique as it’s the first time in the series that the PC version was released simultaneously with console launch, surpassing both PS5 and Xbox Series X in the US. Moreover, Monster Hunter Wilds is the first game from the series to support crossplay, enabling more hunters to join forces for the first time. I personally think the simultaneous PC release and the enduring popularity of Monster Hunter World are likely the primary reasons for Monster Hunter Wilds’ impressive debut. To me, the emphasis on crossplay seems more convincing in this context.
