A tremor, a mere twitch in the vast, indifferent machinery of the market, has afflicted Monday.com. The company, once so confident in its projections of a distant 2027, has now retreated, muttering something about the volatility of small businesses and the unsettling advance of artificial intelligence. It is as if the very foundations of their carefully constructed edifice have begun to shift, revealing the damp earth beneath. The shares, predictably, have suffered a corresponding decline – a most unseemly spectacle, really.
Yet, amidst this general air of disquiet, a curious phenomenon emerges: a “vibe coding tool,” they call it. A most peculiar name, suggestive of something ethereal and fleeting. This tool, launched recently, appears to be generating revenue at a rate that even the most optimistic of Monday.com’s forecasters could not have predicted. The irony, of course, is that it is being introduced precisely when the threat of artificial intelligence looms largest. It is as if they are attempting to build a fortress against a storm with materials scavenged from the wreckage of a previous one.
The Illusion of Value
Every software house, it seems, is now afflicted with a feverish desire to embed artificial intelligence into its products. They promise wonders, of course, but more often deliver only a faint echo of them. Microsoft, for example, has managed to persuade a mere 3% of its commercial productivity suite customers to purchase its “Copilot” add-on. A rather pathetic showing, wouldn’t you agree? One imagines legions of underutilized algorithms languishing in the digital ether, a testament to the folly of chasing every fleeting trend.
Monday.com, however, appears to be having slightly more success with its “Monday Vibe.” The tool allows customers to construct custom applications within the Monday.com environment by simply describing their needs in plain language. A marketing campaign tracker, a time-logging device, an organizational chart – the possibilities, they claim, are endless. One suspects, of course, that the reality is somewhat less boundless, but the principle is intriguing. It is as if they are offering a shortcut, a means of bypassing the tedious complexities of traditional software development.
Previously, building such applications required a degree of technical expertise. Now, it seems, anyone with a vaguely coherent thought can conjure them into existence. The process is not entirely without cost, naturally. The 10-app plan demands $100 per month, while the 25-app plan extracts a rather more substantial $250. A tidy sum, to be sure, but apparently, customers are willing to pay it. Eran Zinman, one of the company’s co-CEOs, has declared that Monday Vibe is the fastest product in their history to exceed $1 million in annual recurring revenue. Faster, even, than their CRM offering, which took three years to reach the same milestone. A most impressive feat, if one overlooks the rather unsettling implications.
The Spectre of Automation
The true danger, of course, lies not in the competition between software vendors, but in the looming threat of complete automation. Artificial intelligence is rapidly approaching a point where it can construct custom applications and workflows without the need for any platform whatsoever. This is an existential crisis for Monday.com, and indeed, for the entire industry. In the past, enterprises chose between project management and CRM solutions. Soon, they will have a third option: simply build whatever they need themselves. It is a chilling prospect, really.
Monday.com, understandably, is attempting to preempt this outcome with its Monday Vibe product. The idea is to lock customers into the platform, to make it so deeply integrated into their operations that abandoning it would be a logistical nightmare. It is a clever strategy, certainly, but one cannot help but wonder if it is merely delaying the inevitable. Monday Vibe generates additional revenue, yes, but more importantly, it may be raising the switching costs for customers. In a world of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, that is a critical consideration. The market, you see, is a fickle beast, and what appears secure today may vanish tomorrow, like a phantom in the fog. One can only hope that Monday.com has accounted for the possibility, and has a plan in place for when the inevitable happens. Because in the grand scheme of things, a “vibe” is a rather fragile thing indeed.
