As an ardent fan of Glen Powell, I must say his journey in Hollywood has been nothing short of exhilarating! From his humble beginnings to sharing the screen with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and now stepping into the shoes of Ben Richards in The Running Man, he’s truly living the dream.
It was whispered that Glen Powell might take over Tom Cruise’s role in the Mission Impossible series, however, the Twister actor dismissed these speculations. As per Powell, assuming the role of such a legendary actor could be a dangerous proposition, and more importantly, his mother would never agree to it.
In an interview with Pat McAfee on ESPN, Powell clarified that there were no talks about him replacing Tom Cruise in the upcoming Mission Impossible film, The Final Reckoning. He jokingly stated, “My mom wouldn’t let me do something like that.” Referring to Cruise’s well-known penchant for live dangerous stunts, he added, “That’s a deadly situation.
During his live show, McAfee caught wind of the news about Powell and decided to give the actor a congratulatory call. However, when McAfee reached out, Powell was busy filming scenes for his latest movie, The Running Man. Since he was all dressed up on set, Powell couldn’t come on camera to accept the call.
The movie, adapted from Stephen King’s renowned novel, is set in a dystopian era governed by Edgar Wright. In this oppressive future, the government holds sway over media, and the narrative unfolds around Ben Richards (Powell), who willingly joins a lethal television game show.
In this upcoming thriller, spanning 30 days, our protagonist finds himself pursued by skilled assassins in a desperate bid to amass the show’s grand prize money – his only hope for financially supporting his ailing child and family amidst the harsh realities of their world. The series boasts an impressive cast including Katy O Brian, Josh Brolin, Daniel Ezra, Lee Pace, Jayme Lawson, Emilia Jones, among others.
Since starring in the hit movie Top Gun: Maverick, Powell’s career has experienced an incredible surge. He then starred in the buzzworthy rom-com Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney. Lastly, his latest film Twisters catapulted him onto the list of highly sought-after young actors in Hollywood, shattering box office records with a staggering $371 million earnings worldwide.
The Running Man is expected to be released on 21 November 2025.
