That makes it one of Disney’s most popular live-action trailers ever, trailing only the teaser for the 2019 remake of The Lion King, which garnered 225 million views.
The trailer for Disney’s Moana had a strong debut, ranking as the third most-viewed trailer released this year. According to Deadline, it garnered views behind Fantastic Four: First Steps (202 million) and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (185 million views in 24 hours). Moana is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 10, 2026, and Disney is anticipating another hit film.
Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail helms the live-action version of the story, with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia playing Moana.

Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui in this story about Moana, who sets out on a thrilling and perilous journey to rescue her people. Guided by the ocean’s call, she leaves her home island of Motunui for the first time, accompanied by Maui. Along the way, they’ll encounter the Kakamora – a surprisingly cute but also fearsome tribe.
Although the trailer was viewed a record number of times, people had a mixed response on social media. Many wondered why Disney was remaking Moana so quickly after the first movie came out in 2016. One fan expressed their confusion, saying, “Wasn’t Moana just released? I thought they were working on Moana 3. This remake doesn’t seem necessary.”
Many viewers weren’t impressed with the computer-generated imagery (CGI), feeling it looked low-budget for a live-action movie.
