Miyazaki’s ‘Future Boy Conan’ Is Coming to Cineverse’s RetroCrush in April

As an ardent fan of anime, I’ve always held the “Future Boy Conan” series in high regard. This captivating series originally graced our screens back in 1978, spanning across 26 episodes. Following its initial run, two enchanting films were produced, and later, a 24-episode sequel series aired from 1999 to 2000.

The animated series draws inspiration from “The Incredible Tide,” a science fiction novel penned by Alexander Key, and was masterfully crafted by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki for the animation studio Nippon Animation during the late 70s.

In a snap, Miyazaki’s initial directorial foray earned classic status, though not as famous as his other works, it remains beloved by kids and a showcase of Miyazaki’s skill. You may have seen it on GKIDS, but starting this month, it finds a fresh abode.

The long-running anime show has earned classic status and remains a cherished example of vintage kids’ animation for many enthusiasts. For years, Western admirers have been able to watch the recently restored high-definition (4K) version on GKIDS since November 2001. However, this is set to alter soon.

Specifically, it’s been announced that “Future Boy Conan” will be moving to a different platform. This is because RetroCrush, a streaming service under Cineverse, has revealed that they have obtained the streaming rights for the anime from GKIDS.

The streaming will commence on April 18, 2025, and fresh episodes will be broadcasted every week. However, there’s an exciting bonus for some subscribers. Specifically, the free, ad-supported linear channel of RetroCrush will run a marathon of “Future Boy Conan” as part of the “A Very Hayao Miyazaki Earth Day” marathon on April 20, 22, and 27, from 8:00 a.m. EDT to 4:00 a.m. EDT the following day.

We’re optimistic that both current and new North American audiences will find delight in the series.
