Millennials, bless their hearts, got in early on the cryptocurrency thing. Back in 2017, when Bitcoin was mostly just a curiosity for people with too much time and disposable income, they were all over it. The market has, naturally, grown. From a pittance to over two trillion dollars. So it goes.
Stablecoins: Digital Pennies
Now they’re fiddling with stablecoins. These are supposed to be cryptocurrencies that don’t… fluctuate. Tied to real money, or something. A new federal law, the Genius Act, gives them a framework. Because everything needs a framework. Last July, 27% of Americans had bought something with these digital pennies. Millennials were higher, at 34%. They like the speed, apparently. 60% said they’d use them for shopping. As if shopping is the answer to anything.
More Money, More Problems
According to Coinbase, millennials are putting more of their money into crypto. And other… non-traditional assets. That’s what they call it. 45% of younger investors own crypto, compared to 18% of older ones. It’s the usual story. Shiny objects attract the young. They allocate 25% of their portfolios to this stuff. Crypto, NFTs, derivatives. It’s a gamble, really. Older investors stick to 8%. They’ve seen things. 25% is a lot, of course. A more sensible 5% to 10% would be… less foolish. But who listens to sense?
The Hunt for the Next Big Thing
Bitcoin, the original, is still king. A trillion and a half dollars. It makes up almost 60% of the market. But millennials want more. They want… diversification. Altcoins. Early-stage token sales. The promise of something bigger, something faster. 46% are interested in altcoins. 47% in token sales. It’s like chasing a ghost. CoinGecko says 53% of these things fail. Naturally. It’s a losing game. But they keep playing. Small positions, they say. Manage your risk. As if that makes a difference. So it goes.
The truth is, most of it is just… noise. A distraction. A way to feel like you’re doing something, when really you’re just watching numbers dance on a screen. But hey, who am I to judge? We all need a little bit of… hope. Even if it’s built on sand.
