As a long-time admirer and devotee of both Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus, I must say that their dynamic is as captivating as their music. The tale of their disagreement over “Used to Be Young” only adds to my fascination with their unique bond. It’s heartwarming to see such a strong, unconditional love between them, even when they don’t see eye-to-eye.
Dolly Parton definitely loves her goddaughter unconditionally, but even the strongest relationships go through phases of disagreement. Don’t worry, though—the disagreement between the two iconic musicians wasn’t that serious. Turns out, Parton just wasn’t on board with Miley Cyrus choosing to record one of her songs.
In a heart-to-heart chat with Harper’s Bazaar last November, the 32-year-old Grammy-winning sensation Miley Cyrus confided that Dolly Parton, at 78, took issue with her 2023 hit single “Used to Be Young.” Here’s why: Miley clarified that Dolly didn’t appreciate the notion of her singing about her past youth in the past tense when she herself was still so vibrantly young. As Miley put it, “Dolly said, ‘I’m not sure I like your new song ‘Used to Be Young’ because it doesn’t seem fair that you’re singing about being no longer young when you’re young and stunning.’
Parton, according to Cyrus, wanted the song for herself, considering she’s almost 80.
It appears that the person known for “Wrecking Ball” might have thought about giving the song to her godmother, as she mentioned in a previous interview that she nearly regretted making it public. More recently, Cyrus stated that she had second thoughts about whether or not the track should be released.
After recognizing that she had grown increasingly private over the years, this sudden burst of self-doubt struck her. The song, in revealing numerous aspects of her personal life, such as her adolescent and young adult mistakes, exposed too much information for comfort. Miley herself admitted that the song was less universally appealing due to its heavy emphasis on her own experiences rather than connecting with fans.
The song’s verses say: “Once, I was certainly madcap / Yes, I was quite lively too / They claim I was untamed back then / I counter that I was just young and carefree / You mention how things have changed me over time / That’s alright; I feel I’ve had a fulfilling journey.
Over time, Cyrus acknowledges and accepts the errors she made while striving to acquire knowledge. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she likens these two elements – her mistakes and newfound wisdom – to the complementary forces of yin and yang.
Cyrus’s fresh insights resonate throughout her forthcoming album, Something Beautiful. She characterized it as an endeavor to heal, in some way, our troubled society through the power of music.
Through this new record, Cyrus aspires to be a psychedelic force for people.
