As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood happenings, I must say, the snubbing of Miley Cyrus’ Beautiful That Way from the Oscars was quite a shocker! With my years of experience following award seasons and their quirks, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected. It’s like watching a rollercoaster ride with thrilling twists and turns, and this year’s Academy Awards race is no exception.
Miley Cyrus’ song “Beautiful That Way,” which earned a Golden Globe nomination and was expected to be in the running for an Oscar for Best Original Song, surprisingly did not make the final cut. On Tuesday, when the Academy revealed their list of 15 nominated songs, this track was noticeably missing, indicating that it didn’t secure a spot among the chosen few.
In a closing note for Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, the song “Beautiful That Way” was penned by Miley Cyrus, Andrew Wyatt, and Lykke Li. Various award prognosticators had speculated that this poignant tune might secure an Oscar nomination, given its acclaim at the Golden Globes.
Many were taken aback when the song didn’t make it onto the Academy’s final list, given that it was widely predicted to be among the leading contenders in its category.
In a new twist, the movie titled “The Last Showgirl” serves as Coppola’s third major production, following “Palo Alto” (2013) and “Mainstream” (2020). This production narrates the tale of a showgirl grappling with the twilight of her three-decade-long career. Additionally, it offers a return to acting stardom for Pamela Anderson, who received a nod for Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her exceptional portrayal in this film.
It turns out that Miley Cyrus isn’t the only artist who didn’t make the Oscar shortlist; several other songs that were predicted to be included were left out as well. For instance, Sky Ferreira, famously known for her 2013 album “Night Time, My Time,” submitted a song titled “Leash” for the Babygirl soundtrack, but it didn’t make the cut either. Similarly, Lady Gaga’s track “Folie à Deux” from the Joker sequel was also missing.
Moreover, “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” renowned tunes from Wicked, also failed to appear on the list. Since they weren’t originally composed for the movie, they didn’t fit the criteria for inclusion.
Despite a few unexpected absences, numerous artists have left their imprint on the Oscar nomination list. Notably, Diane Warren’s composition “The Journey,” performed by H.E.R. for The Six Triple Eight, has garnered attention as one of the notable contenders.
Warren, who has been nominated for an Oscar numerous times, is once more competing for the prestigious accolade. Additionally, Elton John’s “Never Too Late,” showcased in the film “The Queen of Blues,” has also been selected.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who have already won an Academy Award for Best Original Score (for The Social Network and Soul), are now vying for their initial Original Song nomination with “Compress/Repress” from the movie Challengers.
2022’s Oscar competition features some newcomers alongside seasoned nominees. Lin-Manuel Miranda is once again in contention with “Tell Me It’s You” from the movie Mufasa, potentially bringing him a step closer to an EGOT. Previously, he was overlooked for his submissions “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto and “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana.
In addition to the initial nominees, Maren Morris is nominated for “Kiss The Sky” from Wild Robot, and Lainey Wilson is recognized for her country tune “Out of Oklahoma” from Twisters. Kristen Wiig also received a nod for her performance in the song “Harper and Will Go West” from Will & Harper, which was penned by Sean Douglas and Josh Greenbaum.
