It might come as a surprise, but Miley Cyrus wasn’t her original name! The singer, who first gained fame as Hannah Montana, was born Destiny Hope Cyrus and later became known as Miley.

The story behind Miley Cyrus’s name resurfaced recently when her mother, Tish Cyrus, shared it on the Raven and Miranda Podcast. Tish explained how they chose the name during the conversation.

Miley’s mom, Tish, explained that her daughter’s famous nickname began in childhood. Because the baby Miley was always smiling, her family started calling her “Smiley.” Eventually, her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, shortened it to Miley, and the name just stuck, as he recalled they’d often say “Smiley Miley.”

Over time, Miley became very fond of the nickname she was given. In 2008, she made it official, legally changing her name to Miley Ray Cyrus instead of just using it for her career.

In the same interview, Tish shared the stories behind her daughters’ names. She explained that she’d always loved the name Noah, ever since she met a girl named Noah Kelly years ago. As for Brandi, Tish said she named her after a character from a music video she liked in the 1980s.

Once parts of the podcast were shared online, people immediately responded. A lot of fans were surprised to learn Miley’s birth name was actually Destiny Hope. Others complimented Tish on choosing interesting names and said they loved hearing the stories about how the family chose them.
