Mike Morhaime’s Dreamhaven lays off staff following slow game sales

Dreamhaven, a joint venture developed and managed by Mike Morhaime, one of the co-founders of Blizzard Entertainment, has let go of an undisclosed number of employees. As per Morhaime’s update on LinkedIn, these cuts mainly target the publishing division within the company.

The announcement comes after a recent Bloomberg report outlining the challenges Dreamhaven has been facing in game sales.

According to a private document, Bloomberg revealed that the multiplayer shooter game Wildgate managed to sell approximately 130,000 copies across all available platforms after its debut. Meanwhile, Dreamhaven’s cooperative title Sunderfolk achieved sales of roughly 60,000 units.

In the memo, Morhaime communicated to the team that the company’s monthly spending is exceeding income, emphasizing the need for immediate cost reduction in order to ensure its continued existence.

As a game enthusiast speaking here, I’m sharing some tough news: I’ve had to make a challenging call to reshape our team structure, with the most notable impact on our Publishing division. This wasn’t an easy decision – it directly affects skilled individuals who have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for Dreamhaven and powering through what has been a thrilling yet tumultuous year for us.

He went on to say: “Not only have members at Dreamhaven orchestrated the Dreamhaven Showcase and released three games, they’ve also played a crucial role in spreading our games globally. I cannot express enough my appreciation for the ingenuity, perseverance, and diligence displayed by those who are departing from us. They will be sorely missed… To all who stand by us through this change – thank you. Despite the difficulties today brings, I remain hopeful about Dreamhaven’s future and the adventures yet to unfold.
