‘Might Want To Sit Up Straighter’: Kate Winslet Says She Was Asked To Cover Her Belly Rolls While Filming Her Movie Lee

As an ardent admirer of Kate Winslet, I find myself deeply inspired by her courage and authenticity. Her unwavering commitment to embracing her body, flaws, and all, is nothing short of remarkable. In an industry where perfection is often the standard, Kate stands out as a beacon of body positivity.

In the same open manner Kate Winslet is known for, she didn’t hesitate to share during an interview that there was a request for her to conceal her stomach bulges during a scene in her recent film titled “Lee.”

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar for their recent cover feature (released on Tuesday), the actress who starred in Titanic reminisced about an unexpected event. She shared, “There’s a scene where Lee is sitting on a bench wearing a bikini… And during breaks, one of the crew members approached and suggested, ‘Perhaps you should sit up a bit straighter.'”

Winslet said, “You don’t notice my tummy rolls? Absolutely not!” She further clarified, “That was intentional.”

In an interview about “The Reader,” the actress admitted that she intentionally stopped exercising prior to filming to give her character a softer appearance. When asked if she would mind if her body wasn’t considered “perfect” by others, she replied, “Absolutely not.” The actress explained, “I value it because it reflects my life and experiences. To me, it never crossed my mind to hide that aspect of myself.”

In her interview, she added that she believes society is progressing positively regarding the way women’s bodies are viewed. Winslet stated that she experienced great relief seeing women embracing themselves and facing less criticism.

Charlize Theron, who played in “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” mentioned that she could not recall any contemporary actress from her generation whose mother would frequently compliment themselves by looking in the mirror and saying, “I look nice.” Instead, she recalled her mother often expressing self-doubt with statements like, “Oh God, I don’t think I can wear this, do I look hippie? Does my bum look big?”

Actress Winslet emphasized that we often squander too much energy being self-critical, a practice she intends to avoid from now on. Previously, she’s shared her experiences with bullying due to her weight during her childhood and teenage years.

In 2016, she confided in Today about similar experiences. Winslet disclosed that she was subjected to bullying during her school years. She reminisced that it was due to being “overweight” and there were girls who were “jealous” of the actress as she started acting at a young age.

According to Page Six, during the time when her movie Titanic became widely known around the world, discussions about her weight were quite prominent in the media.

As reported by the source, way back in 2003, when it wasn’t typical for actresses to critique magazines, British GQ faced criticism from Kate Winslet. This was due to their alteration of her body to make her appear thinner on the cover of their February issue. Later on, they confessed to this action.

2021 saw the actress openly state that she requested director Craig Zobel of Mare of Easttown to maintain her natural figure during an intimate scene, as reported by a publication.
