One finds oneself, rather frequently these days, discussing the vagaries of the market. And two names keep cropping up, don’t you know? Microsoft and Netflix. Both, shall we say, a trifle off their peaks. Perfectly understandable, of course. Nothing stays fashionable forever.
But which, if one were forced to choose – and the market, naturally, forces one to choose – presents the more… agreeable proposition? Let’s have a little dig, shall we?
Netflix’s Recent Diversion
First, the matter of why each is currently experiencing a bit of a wobble. Netflix, it appears, attempted a rather ambitious acquisition – Warner Bros. Discovery. A perfectly respectable firm, I’m sure. But the deal, alas, went rather spectacularly nowhere. Paramount Skydance, with a slightly more… generous offer, swept in and claimed the prize. Netflix, quite sensibly, withdrew. The market, predictably, had a little flutter of excitement, as if a cancelled luncheon were a matter of international importance.
Microsoft’s little dip, however, is a touch more… elusive. It’s leading the charge in this artificial intelligence business – frightfully clever, really – and continues to deliver perfectly adequate results. Yet the share price has stumbled. Down about 25% from its zenith. The market, it seems, is having a bit of a wobble over all this AI spending, wanting a return on investment. As if expecting miracles overnight. Rather tiresome, don’t you think?
Microsoft, you see, isn’t attempting to create its own AI model. Far too much bother. It’s chosen the role of facilitator, offering a platform for others on its Azure cloud. Every penny spent on computing power is, in effect, a service provided. A perfectly sound business model, if I may say so. Clients pay for the privilege. It’s rather like running a particularly exclusive club.
So, with Netflix’s little drama concluded and Microsoft’s position… well, let’s call it ‘peculiar’, which presents the more sensible investment?
Microsoft: A Question of Value
If one were to judge these two by their earnings potential over the next fiscal year, one would discover that Netflix is… rather more expensive. A simple observation, really.

This, naturally, inclines one towards Microsoft. Especially when one considers that the growth rates of these two are… remarkably similar. One doesn’t require a degree in finance to grasp that, does one?

However, one can certainly envision a case for Netflix. The market, after all, is frequently irrational. And the perceived risk of Microsoft’s AI expenditure does give one pause.
Netflix, one must admit, possesses a remarkable… stickiness. No matter what calamities befall the streaming landscape, viewers always seem to return. A comforting thought, in these turbulent times.
Microsoft, too, is undeniably sticky. Its software has powered businesses for decades. But what if this generative AI business proves to be a colossal flop? What if its clients suddenly decide they’ve had enough? A rather bleak scenario, admittedly, but one must consider all possibilities. It would leave Microsoft with a great deal of computing power and very little to do with it.
Overall, I find myself leaning towards Microsoft. It seems the more… sensible option. However, if one is troubled by the AI spending – and frankly, one is entitled to be – investing in Netflix wouldn’t be entirely unreasonable. Before the acquisition announcement, Netflix shares traded at nearly $110. One wouldn’t be surprised to see them return to that level in the coming weeks. But if this AI buildout continues for years, and Microsoft’s cloud business flourishes alongside it, the long-term upside is considerably greater. One simply must be prepared to exercise a little patience. A virtue, sadly, in short supply these days.
