Look, I’m a portfolio manager. People expect me to have opinions on stocks. And frankly, it’s exhausting. Everyone’s got a hot tip, a “sure thing.” It’s always a “sure thing” right before it isn’t. So, when someone asked me about a ten-year hold, I just wanted to say, “Ten years? Are you kidding me? I can barely plan what I’m having for lunch.” But then I thought, fine. Microsoft. It’s… acceptable.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not like I like Microsoft. It’s just… it’s there. It’s like beige. No one’s excited about beige, but it doesn’t offend anyone either. And in this market, offensive is everywhere. You’d think a company that makes operating systems could figure out how to make a decent update process. It’s always, “Do you want to update now? Maybe later? Never?” It’s a commitment, is what it is! And I don’t want a commitment from my computer.
The thing is, these other tech companies… they’re so fragile. One app does well, everyone loses their minds. Then, poof, the app is gone, and the stock is down 30%. Microsoft has, like, seven different things going on. Office, which, yes, is still a thing apparently, Azure, that cloud thing, Xbox, which is just a way to spend too much money on virtual stuff. It’s a diversified mess, but a mess that might actually survive. They’re not putting all their eggs in one ridiculous, trendy basket. It’s almost… responsible.
And honestly, the recent dip? Good. Finally, a little sanity. Everyone panicked over some earnings report. “Disappointment,” they called it. Like a company the size of Microsoft is going to have some revolutionary quarter every single time. It’s exhausting to maintain that level of performance. So, the stock went down 11%. Perfect. A little discount for those of us who are willing to hold on for the long haul. Not because I want to, mind you. Just because it’s… efficient.
Look, I’m not saying Microsoft is going to make me rich. I’m just saying it’s probably not going to completely ruin my day. And in this market, that’s a win. A small, beige, slightly annoyed win. But a win nonetheless. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to call customer service about a software update that keeps asking me if I want to disable my firewall. The nerve!
