Right, so Microsoft. They’ve built themselves a rather impressive AI playground, haven’t they? Copilot, their chatbot/assistant/general digital busybody, is supposed to be the thing that catapults them even further ahead. Honestly, though, looking at the numbers… it’s less a catapult and more a gentle nudge. Fifteen million paying customers. Fifteen million. It’s… polite. And they’ve finally admitted that number, which is always a good sign – transparency, or at least the appearance of it. Analysts were expecting fireworks, I gather. They got… sparklers. And frankly, I’m not entirely convinced that’s a disaster.

UBS analysts are apparently concerned that Copilot hasn’t translated into accelerated revenue growth for Microsoft 365. They’re not seeing a big “usage ramp.” Honestly? That’s not entirely shocking. People are creatures of habit. They’re perfectly happy doing things the old way, even if there’s a slightly more efficient (and expensive) option available. It’s like refusing to learn how to use a smart TV remote. Why bother when the old one still works?
The Silver Lining (and Why I’m Not Panicking… Yet)
Here’s the thing: that relatively small number of paid Copilot users isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It means there’s still plenty of room for growth. If they can replicate that 160% growth again next year – a big ‘if’, admittedly – that’s an additional $8.6 billion in revenue. That’s nearly 3% of their projected revenue for fiscal year 2026. It’s not insignificant. Though, let’s not get carried away. Projections are just… guesses, really.
Look, Copilot doesn’t have to be a ChatGPT rival. Microsoft has plenty of other strong businesses. They’ve got significant stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic, so they benefit if those companies succeed. AI is important, sure, but it’s not the be-all and end-all. It should be positioned as a value-add, not the main product. Like a really fancy attachment for a perfectly functional appliance.
Copilot needs to keep Microsoft 365 competitive. If they can leverage AI to maintain their dominance in the office suite space, that’s a win. It’s about staving off competition and keeping those 365 subscribers happy. AI adoption is still in its early stages. People may simply not be ready to embrace these tools yet. And honestly? That’s okay. Sometimes, it’s nice to just… do things the way you always have. It’s less stressful. And who doesn’t need a little less stress in their life?
