Microsoft continues to make adjustments in its gaming division after recent rounds of layoffs, as reported by Jason Schreier from Bloomberg. It appears that the game Contraband, which Avalanche Studios had been working on for multiple years, has been cancelled by Microsoft.
Four years back, I eagerly caught wind of the upcoming game from the Just Cause studio, a tantalizing hint of their next masterpiece unveiled through the logo and title alone. Since then, they’ve kept the project veiled in secrecy, with nary a peep or revelation about it.
Avalanche Studios Group and Xbox Game Studios Publishing have officially ended work on Contraband, as announced on their website after a report by Schreier. In their statement, they expressed that development has been halted temporarily while they assess the game’s future. They appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the community since the announcement and will share more details about what’s next as soon as possible.
The studio’s phrasing suggests that there remains a possibility that the game could be released, potentially under the guidance of a new publisher who could help bring it to completion.
According to reports, it has been verified by a Microsoft representative that the cooperative project between Hideo Kojima and Xbox, named OD, continues to be under development.
In simpler terms, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, disclosed that they are currently working on approximately forty different video games. These upcoming games will be displayed during Gamescom 2025.
