Microsoft: Avowed Delay Isn’t About Quality

As a seasoned gamer with years of RPG exploration under my belt, I can’t help but appreciate the strategic move by Phil Spencer and his team at Xbox. Delaying ‘Avowed’ until February 2025 might seem like a long wait, but it’s all about quality over quantity.

The release date for the upcoming role-playing game ‘Avowed’ from Obsidian Entertainment has been moved to February 18, 2025. This change isn’t because of any development problems but rather a strategic decision to avoid being eclipsed by other significant releases on Xbox Game Pass.

Phil Spencer, the leader of Xbox, underscored that the game is in a robust state and that the postponement is aimed at ensuring it receives the necessary focus and care.

In a recent interview, Spencer stated that the postponement of release was a tactical decision aimed at spacing out games on Xbox Game Pass. He pointed out that with titles such as ‘Diablo’ expansion, ‘Black Ops’, and ‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’ scheduled for release, it was wise to provide ‘Avowed’ its own limelight. This strategy intends to guarantee each game receives the focus it requires without clashing over players’ attention.

Spencer mentioned that Obsidian plans to utilize the extra time given to them for more fine-tuning on the game, despite the delay not being related to quality issues. This additional span offers the developers a chance to hone the player’s experience, guaranteeing that the debut of ‘Avowed’ will be its finest version upon release.

NEW: I talked to Microsoft gaming CEO @XboxP3

– Bullish on WoW; thinks STALKER 2 will be on some GOTY lists
– MS’ PC-only games (not on Xbox) mostly an “anomaly”
– Game Pass pacing led to Avowed delay, allowing for more polish. (Sign of how they’ll manage a growing portfolio)

It’s crucial to note that the readiness of this game is important, given the current lack of first-party titles from Xbox. Phil Spencer, in explaining that there aren’t any development issues causing a delay, seeks to assure gamers about the quality of the game and Xbox’s dedication to providing high-quality content.

The game titled ‘Avowed’ is scheduled to debut on both Xbox and PC platforms, including Windows and Steam. This postponement means that players will get to enjoy a refined role-playing game experience sometime in the beginning of 2025.
