Mick Foley Cuts Ties With WWE Over Trump’s Controversial Reiner Remarks

WWE legend Mick Foley has ended his association with the company. He said the final straw was President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about filmmaker Rob Reiner.

Mick Foley, a major star during WWE’s popular “Attitude Era” and a former WWE Champion (having defeated The Rock in 1999), later came back to WWE working as both an on-screen authority figure and a commentator.

As a longtime wrestling fan, I was really interested to see Mick Foley’s recent post about why he’s distancing himself from WWE. He explained he’d been uncomfortable with the company’s relationship with Donald Trump for a while, but Trump’s comments about Carl Reiner’s passing were the last straw for him. It’s no secret Trump and WWE have a history – he’s appeared on their shows, was inducted into their Hall of Fame, and remains close with the McMahon family, including Linda McMahon, who’s currently in the cabinet. Honestly, this connection has dragged WWE into political arguments time and time again, and it sounds like Foley just couldn’t stay silent anymore.

Even though Donald Trump has been a controversial figure, WWE has largely welcomed him, featuring him at events and receiving support from many of its biggest wrestlers.

Trump’s remarks about Rob Reiner drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, leading people to ask if businesses should continue working with him. On Monday, Trump stated that Reiner’s recent passing was caused by an intense focus on him, and referred to Reiner as mentally unstable.

In an Instagram post, Foley stated he wants no further connection with a company that supports someone who appears to lack empathy and is leading the country towards authoritarian rule.

Mick Foley has announced he’s ending his appearances with WWE as long as Donald Trump is president. He also won’t be renewing his contract with the company when it’s up in June. Despite his affection for WWE and gratitude for the opportunities he’s had there, Foley explained, quoting Popeye the Sailor, that he’s reached his limit and can’t continue under the current circumstances.

Mick Foley publicly backed musician Jack White after White strongly criticized Donald Trump’s comments as “disgusting” and “indefensible,” describing the use of someone’s death for personal gain or political advantage as a “corrupt and narcissistic sin.” Foley shared on Instagram that he couldn’t understand how his fellow WWE performers could support, or even be near, Trump.

This decision represents a significant break between a well-known wrestler and WWE, stemming from political disagreements – a rare occurrence in recent years. Foley leaving highlights the difficult position WWE is in, trying to balance its past relationship with Donald Trump and respond to concerns from both its performers and fans.
