As a long-time fan of Michelle Yeoh‘s exceptional acting prowess, it is absolutely thrilling to witness her taking on the role of Madame Morrible in the upcoming blockbuster Wicked. The fact that she was initially unacquainted with the world of Wicked adds an intriguing twist to this already captivating story.
In the upcoming magical movie “Wicked,” Michelle Yeoh has been chosen to depict Madame Morrible. She’ll be acting alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who will also appear in the film. In this story, Yeoh’s character is a professor at a university.
Approaching the movie’s release, Yeoh disclosed that she hadn’t been familiar with Wicked until the director, Jon M. Chu, reached out for her to play the role. At the LA premiere of the film, this Academy Award-winning actress admitted that she hadn’t seen many Broadway shows and was previously unaware of the idea behind Wicked.
At the movie’s premiere, the actress from Crazy Rich Asians confessed that when she read her lines, she was puzzled because she hadn’t seen the Wicked musical previously. Although she knew The Wizard of Oz, she hadn’t watched Wicked yet, as she had been away from theaters and neglecting her passion for watching musicals for a while now, which she regretted to admit.
The upcoming film is based on the popular Broadway musical, with Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originally portraying Glinda and Elphaba. In this movie version, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will star as the main characters, joined by a cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Yeoh, and Bowen Yang playing various roles.
In her chats during the gathering, a woman of Asian descent shared that she had read the script, phoned Jon back, and said, “This is a musical, and she sings.” To which he replied, “Oh, it’ll be a breeze; you’ll enjoy it; you’re ready for the task.” She went on to recount how, shortly after, she received a video call from him along with Ariana and Cynthia, who said, “You need to join us immediately.
The actress openly admitted that she felt quite anxious about singing in the movie, however, after collaborating with a vocal coach, the experience of training and learning to utilize muscles differently turned out to be incredibly beneficial for her acting career, since it improved her vocal abilities. As a result, she enjoyed the process.
Wicked will release in theaters on November 22.
