Michelle Yeoh Admits She Felt Like A ‘Failure’ During Fertility Struggles; Says ‘You Have To Let Go’

As a dedicated fan, I cannot help but admire the resilience and grace of Michelle Yeoh. Her journey, marked by struggles yet filled with triumphs, is truly inspiring. The heartbreak she experienced due to her infertility struggles and the impact it had on her marriage are testaments to the challenges life often presents us. Yet, her ability to let go, move on, and find solace in the love of her godchildren, nephews, nieces, and now a grandchild, is a testament to her strength and adaptability.

Michelle Yeoh candidly discussed her battles with infertility during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. The Oscar-winning actress shared that she yearned to have children, but the fertility challenges she faced throughout her marriage to Hong Kong entrepreneur Dickson Poon unfortunately remained unresolved, leaving her feeling like a “failure.

She shared that the most challenging period for her is when she often feels like a failure each month, she confessed. However, she later recognized that certain aspects of our bodies may not function as intended, and that’s simply how life goes.

She advised, “You need to release the past and start anew. I believe you’ll reach a stage where you should stop holding yourself accountable.” However, it took her a significant amount of time to accept her infertility, which played a role in her first divorce with Yeoh. Their marriage lasted from 1988 to 1992.

In 2023, the actress finally married her longtime partner Jean Todt, following a 19-year engagement. Although not having children is the “greatest sorrow” in her life (as expressed in an interview with The Times), she finds joy in being a godmother to six children and having numerous nephews and nieces.

In a casual and straightforward manner: “Although I’m 62, having a baby isn’t an option for me now, but with our recent grandchild, it makes me feel incredibly fortunate to still have a little one in my life. It’s as if the blessings keep on coming,” she expressed. Notably, Yeoh made history by becoming the first Asian woman to receive an Oscar for best actress, which she earned for her role as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Currently, she’s featuring in one of the year’s most eagerly awaited films, titled “Wicked.” This movie is an adaptation from one of Broadway’s biggest hits and follows the growth of a special friendship between Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (portrayed by Cynthia Erivo). In this production, Yeoh, who worked with director Jon M. Chu again, plays Madame Morrible, a headmistress at Shiz University.

Wicked which is framed as a prequel to Wizard of Oz will hit the theaters on November 22.
