17 years after the groundbreaking premiere of Brokeback Mountain, Michelle Williams remains astonished that the movie wasn’t awarded Best Picture by the Academy at the 2006 Oscars.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Williams maintained his long-standing disbelief about the controversial win of Paul Haggis’s film “Crash” – an event that sparked widespread indignation initially and continues to draw criticism even now.
Cohen, expressing how much he loved the movie, inquired from the actress, “Were you aware while filming it that such a deep influence it would exert on viewers?” To this, she responded, “Indeed, I sensed it since viewers were so transparent about it.
Reflecting on the enduring influence of the film, I can’t help but recall the powerful impact of Ang Lee’s 2005 neo-Western romance during its promotional tour. It struck a deep chord, particularly with male viewers. In fact, it left me wondering, “What was that movie, Crash?
To Williams, the strong response indicated just how powerful the film was and hinted at its growing importance over the next few years.
She remarked, “The openness about it was striking. What stands out in my mind is participating in the media tour, or junket. It’s rare to witness many mature men crying. That particular instance, I believe, was when we all realized that this was going to be something extraordinary.
IndieWire reports that Ang Lee believed his film Brokeback Mountain was unfairly overlooked when it lost Best Picture to Crash, attributing this oversight to the Academy’s discomfort with the movie’s LGBTQ+ themes and potential underlying homophobia. In an interview, Lee explained, “At the time, [Brokeback Mountain] had its limitations. We received a lot of support – up until that point. It carries that sense. I wasn’t harboring resentment or anything. It’s just how things were.
The movie Brokeback Mountain, featuring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, David Harbour, Anna Faris, Kate Mara, and Randy Quaid (and others) was a huge success both commercially and critically. It received eight nominations for the Academy Awards and won three Oscars.
