Six years since the worldwide uproar following “Leaving Neverland,” I, as an ardent admirer turned truth-seeker, find myself drawn back into the limelight alongside Wade Robson and James Safechuck. These two gentlemen, who have bravely accused Michael Jackson of abuse, will recount their harrowing experiences and the tumultuous journey that ensued after they spoke up, in a groundbreaking new documentary titled “Surviving Michael Jackson.
On March 18th, Channel 4 in the U.K. will broadcast a one-hour sequel to the original documentary. This new production, directed by Dan Reed (who previously worked on “Leaving Neverland”), will delve into the experiences of Robson and Safechuck as they’ve dealt with public reactions since their accusations were first made public in the 2019 HBO documentary. The sequel aims to shed light on their ongoing challenges and legal battles they continue to face.
Instead of HBO, Surviving Michael Jackson will not be associated with it in this new production. Back in 2019, the network faced a $100 million lawsuit from Michael Jackson’s estate due to allegations that the original documentary infringed upon a non-disparagement clause from a 1992 concert film agreement. This legal dispute was taken to arbitration and remains unsettled as of September 2024.
Robson and Safechuck have openly discussed the challenges they faced when speaking out as grown-ups. When ‘Leaving Neverland’ was first shown, Robson referred to the experience as “therapeutic,” even though he encountered strong criticism. For more than a decade now, these two individuals have been pursuing legal action in their quest for justice.
Jackson’s estate has persistently refuted all claims, upholding his innocence. Despite numerous accusations that emerged prior to and post his 2009 demise, the music legend was never found guilty in a court of law for any criminal activity.
As “Surviving Michael Jackson” is about to be broadcast, this upcoming documentary is likely to spark renewed discussions on the accusations against him, his legacy, and the consequences of challenging influential figures. For Robson and Safechuck, this film serves as another step in their journey to reveal the truth about their experiences.
