Michael Mann’s Supernatural Horror Film ‘The Keep’ About Nazis is Coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray [New Trailer Released]

As a long-time admirer of Michael Mann’s work, I’ve always been intrigued by his lesser-known gems, and “The Keep” certainly falls into that category. This film, with its unique blend of supernatural horror and historical elements, stands out as an unusual yet captivating entry in Mann’s distinguished career.

Movie director Michael Mann, famous for films like Ferrari and Heat, has rarely spoken about his second movie, The Keep. Released in 1983, this film combining fantasy and horror genres was substantially altered by the studio during production, disrupting Mann’s unique, dreamlike narrative style. The story revolves around a group of Nazis who seek guidance from a Jewish historian to escape impending doom, intertwining supernatural terror with historical elements.

Instead of following his typical pattern of neo-noir crime stories featuring professionals, The Keep is a remarkable deviation in Mann’s career portfolio. Although the movie is now largely forgotten, its daring and distinctive style continues to make an indelible mark.

The studio’s extensive cuts resulted in a final act that is almost impossible to follow, turning the film into a confusing jumble of scenes. Despite this, The Keep has developed a cult following over the years and is now being released in 4K UHD/Blu-ray for the first time, thanks to a new Limited Edition Slipcase set from Vinegar Syndrome.

The narrative revolves around a band of Nazis, stationed at an old Romanian fortress in 1941, who unwittingly set free a malevolent entity called Radu Molasar. Molasar subsequently exploits a weak Jewish historian named Theodore Cuza to facilitate his escape. Simultaneously, their actions unwittingly awaken a strange and potent figure, who embarks on a journey to confront the evil they have unleashed.

Initially upon its release, “The Keep” garnered varied opinions from critics. They found its narrative to be perplexing yet admired its breathtaking visual effects. Despite underperforming at the American box office, the movie eventually amassed a devoted following.

The movie initially came out on home video, but it didn’t have an official DVD release until 2020. That year, a remastered version was released by Via Vision in Australia.
