Director Michael Mann is exploring the possibility of using artificial intelligence in his upcoming *Heat 2* sequel. The 81-year-old filmmaker mentioned that AI could be used to realistically show characters at different ages, as the movie jumps between various points in time.
Mann emphasized the importance of realistically portraying characters at different ages. He explained that the story spans multiple time periods, and he’s interested in using AI to create smooth transitions between them—as long as it doesn’t compromise the genuine emotion in the actors’ performances.
Fans of the 1995 crime film *Heat* were excited to hear about the sequel. *Heat 2* will show what happened before and after the original movie, which starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. Because the film jumps between two different time periods, creating the visual effects and makeup will be complex, and filmmakers are considering using artificial intelligence to help.
Mann emphasized that AI will only be used to enhance the storytelling, not as a superficial trick. He explained, “I’ve always focused on realism and emotion, and if AI can help achieve that while still respecting the actors’ performances, then it’s just another useful tool for a filmmaker.”
This project is inspired by Michael Mann’s 2022 novel, which he wrote with Meg Gardiner, and continues the exciting, high-stakes world of law enforcement and criminals that made the original movie *Heat* so famous. While details are still scarce, Mann has indicated the film is progressing and will use cutting-edge technology to achieve its grand scope.
As a movie fan, I’m really excited about how AI could change things in Hollywood. Imagine being able to realistically de-age actors or even jump forward and backward in time within a story! It feels like a huge leap forward, combining all the classic filmmaking magic with some seriously cool new tech. I think it could open up so many possibilities for storytelling.
