As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the ups and downs of DC adaptations, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when recalling the Batgirl saga. It’s like playing an epic RPG game, only to find out that despite investing so much time and effort, the final chapter was never released due to some mysterious glitch in the system.
In more straightforward terms: Lately, many DC film adaptations have fallen short and even some upcoming projects were scrapped as they didn’t meet quality standards. A notable example is the canceled “Batgirl” movie. Although the debate over it has subsided, it stirred a lot of controversy when it was first announced.
In case you missed it, there were plans for a Batgirl-focused film at one point. Let us bring you up to speed on this!
In May 2016, Batgirl was initially considered for the movie “Birds of Prey” (2020), which centered around women characters. However, she didn’t make the final cut as the creators decided to concentrate on a standalone film instead. Joss Whedon was initially brought on board to script, direct, and produce this solo project. But he stepped down in 2018, citing difficulties in coming up with a compelling storyline and apprehensions about a male director taking charge of a female-oriented production.
In April 2018, Christina Hodson joined the team to draft a new screenplay. Later, it was decided that the movie would be premiered solely on HBO Max, as part of DC Films’ modified plan. By April 2021, it had been confirmed as an original production for HBO Max, with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directing, and Kristin Burr producing. Their goal was to offer a new perspective on Gotham City.
The movie was almost ready for release after post-production when suddenly it was halted and deemed unreleasable. The project, costing an estimated $90 million, didn’t align with CEO David Zaslav’s idea of “grand theater films.” Initially, there were thoughts that the film wasn’t good enough to screen, but later it was seen more as a tax deduction. DC Studios’ new co-CEO, Peter Safran, later explained that the movie was so full of issues that its release could have damaged the DC brand.
To put it simply, what’s Michael Keaton‘s involvement here? Keaton had plans to return as Batman in the upcoming film. However, when interviewed by GQ regarding the movie’s termination, his response took everyone by surprise.
I didn’t have a preference either way. Big fun, great movie check. …I like those directors. They’re good guys. [Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah] I root for them. I hope they do well, and I think they felt really bad about something, which in turn made me feel sad. As for me, I’m fine.
In the 2023 flick “The Flash,” Keaton made a reappearance as Batman. Despite the film’s disappointing box office performance, viewers largely enjoyed seeing him once again embody the legendary character.
