As a die-hard Michael Jackson fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the day when we can finally witness his life story unfold on the big screen. The movie, titled ‘Michael’, was initially set to premiere on October 3, 2025, but has now been officially moved up to April 24, 2026. Lionsgate and Universal Pictures have confirmed this global release date, which includes IMAX theaters as well. Interestingly enough, the film’s release date has undergone several changes since its initial announcement for an April 18, 2025, premiere. Can’t wait to relive the King of Pop’s magic on the silver screen!
In the United States, the distribution of the movie is taken care of by Lionsgate, whereas Universal Pictures manages its international release, except for Japan, where Kino Films will be responsible for releasing it, according to Variety’s report.
Why was the Michael Jackson biopic delayed?
Based on information available, it appears that the main reason for the delay was due to additional filming and the requirement to handle content related to legal concerns. Initially, the production contained mentions of Jordan Chandler, a 13-year-old who made allegations of molestation against Michael Jackson in 1993. Jackson resolved the case outside of court in 1994 without acknowledging any wrongdoing.
Despite John Logan’s screenplay being approved and filmed with Chandler in the role, a change occurred during post-production when it was discovered that Chandler wouldn’t be able to participate. This necessitated reshoots and modifications to the script following the completion of production in May 2024.
Furthermore, the initial version of the movie lasted approximately 3.5 hours, leading to internal debates on reducing its duration. A possibility under consideration is dividing the biography into two parts for easier viewing by the public.
Here’s what we know about the team behind the film
As an ardent admirer, let me express that I’m thrilled about the upcoming movie, which I can hardly wait to see! This cinematic masterpiece is none other than the brainchild of Antoine Fuqua, renowned for his remarkable work on Training Day. Taking center stage in this production is Jaafar Jackson, the genuine nephew of the legendary Michael Jackson. It’s an exciting turn of events that I can hardly contain my excitement about!
Fuqua’s name carries immense weight in the industry, and he’ll be joined by the illustrious Graham King, a multiple Oscar-winning producer who brought us the worldwide sensation Bohemian Rhapsody. The pairing of these two powerhouses is a testament to the caliber of this film.
To top it all off, the screenplay has been penned by John Logan, an exceptional talent with a staggering three Oscar nominations under his belt. His impressive resume includes blockbusters like Gladiator and The Aviator, making this collaboration an unparalleled fusion of creativity and talent. I can barely contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate the magic that will unfold on the big screen!
