The documentary titled “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson” has brought renewed attention to Wade Robson and James Safechuck, two individuals who have accused the late Michael Jackson of sexual misconduct.
The one-hour documentary, helmed by Dan Reed, delves deeper into the claims initially aired in HBO’s Leaving Neverland in 2019. This fresh film examines the resistance these two men encountered and their continuing legal dispute with Michael Jackson’s estate – as reported by PEOPLE.
Robson and Safechuck have openly discussed the intimidating and negative responses they encountered following their disclosures. In a documentary, Robson described it as “extremely scary.
The global response, including enraged Michael fans and the media, could sometimes be incredibly harsh.” Safechuck stated, “What transpired was precisely the fearsome event I had always been most dreading.
Wade Robson and James Safechuck assert that Michael Jackson inappropriately sexualized them when they were children, as detailed in the documentary Leaving Neverland 2. In this documentary, Safechuck recounts an instance where Jackson reportedly warned him, “Your life would be ruined if people knew,” and he also shares a memory of waking up to find Jackson claiming he had performed oral sex on him.
In April 2023, attorney Jonathan Steinsapir confirmed that the estate of Michael Jackson firmly rejected all accusations. He expressed unwavering faith in Jackson’s innocence, stating that the claims contradicted all reliable evidence and supporting proof. He further stated that they trusted the truth would eventually come to light, bringing vindication for Jackson once more.
In the 2005 trial, Robson provided testimony supporting Jackson’s innocence, claiming there was no abuse at that time. Similarly, Safechuck had previously testified on Jackson’s behalf during the 1993 trial.
Currently, both parties assert they were coerced into silence. Robson confessed that he truly felt fearful, reminiscing about Jackson’s threat that if their secret was revealed, they would both face imprisonment.
The documentary features excerpts from the 2019 interview between Robson, Safechuck, and Oprah Winfrey. During this conversation, they discussed their personal experiences. Robson mentioned that Winfrey empathized with what they had been through. Given her own experiences as a survivor of abuse, Winfrey provided them support amidst the criticism she faced.
Nonetheless, Jackson’s relatives and admirers have vigorously stood up for the deceased artist. In a 2019 conversation with Gayle King, Jackson’s brothers and his nephew Taj asserted that the accusations were fueled by monetary motives. An advocate for Jackson in the latest film contends that the dispute is entirely rooted in greed and money.
