Michael Gandolfini has discussed the possibility of reprising the role of a young Tony Soprano if a prequel series were to materialize. The son of the late James Gandolfini, who famously played the unforgettable mob boss on The Sopranos, addressed the rumors in a recent conversation.
When asked about returning to his old role, Michael emphasized that the decision isn’t within his control. “You see,” he explained, referring to the show’s creator David Chase, “it’s really David’s world. The final say belongs to him. I know that David is currently working on other projects unrelated to ‘Sopranos’, which sounds intriguing.
Michael mentioned his hope of working with Chase once more, but feels uncertain about Tony reappearing. Essentially, he believes Tony is likely finished for good, though anything’s possible; in his opinion, it seems Tony’s story has come to an end.
In the 2021 movie prequel titled “The Many Saints of Newark“, Michael took on the role of a younger character based on his father. This film delved into Tony Soprano’s early years. Reflecting on this experience, he expressed his appreciation for being involved in the world of “The Sopranos“. He stated, “I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of that story. I got to contribute a small piece to such an immense universe, and it’s truly one of the most significant gifts my career has received. So I am grateful for it, and I’m eager to embark on new endeavors.
In the turbulent setting of the 1960s Newark uprisings, the movie “The Many Saints of Newark” chronicles the emergence of Tony Soprano, mentored into the criminal underworld by his uncle Dickie Moltisanti, portrayed by Alessandro Nivola. The film boasts a talented cast including Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Leslie Odom Jr., Michela De Rossi, Vera Farmiga, and the late Ray Liotta.
For Michael, assuming the part of young Tony wasn’t just another acting gig – it was intensely meaningful to him. At eight years old, when The Sopranos concluded its six-season run in 2007, stepping into his father’s shoes was an emotional and challenging endeavor. As he put it in a past interview, “The whole process was one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever had the privilege to do. First, discovering the show for myself as a fan… I hadn’t seen it before; I didn’t know what it was about. Falling in love with the series was an unforgettable experience for me, and feeling proud of my dad and everyone I’ve known for a long time made it even more special.
Initially uncertain about trying out for the role, he ultimately seized the chance. “At first, there was a struggle between wanting to do it and wondering what others would think,” he reminisced. “But then, finding myself drawn into David’s writing. Then fearing I wouldn’t get the part – I needed it, I wanted it. At the close of the day, I ended up working with these talented individuals, which has been an invaluable experience. This is the first time I’ve ever felt this emotional. They trusted me.
