Michael Bay & Sydney Sweeney Team Up For ‘OutRun’ Movie

Get ready for some high-speed action as Universal brings yet another video game adaptation into their roster, this time helmed by Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney in “OutRun”.

At present, the production team is working on creating a movie adaptation of Sega’s classic game, OutRun. Michael Bay will be helming the project as director, while Sydney Sweeney takes on the role of producer (according to Deadline).

As a die-hard fan of retro gaming, I can’t help but reminisce about one of Sega’s timeless classics – the arcade racer that took the world by storm in the 80s. We’re talking about none other than the iconic OutRun franchise!

Just like the recent successes of adaptations such as Minecraft, the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the terrifying tale of Five Nights at Freddy’s, it seems Hollywood is increasingly embracing video games, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

From the small screen to the big one, we’ve seen captivating adaptations like those based on The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and even Fallout. The trend is undeniable, and I can hardly wait to see how OutRun will translate onto the silver screen!

Sweeney Producing, Bay Directing

Through her production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, Sydney Sweeney is currently involved in a project as the producer. At this stage, she isn’t planned to appear onscreen. Michael Bay will take up direction and co-production duties through his Platinum Dunes studio, working alongside his frequent partner Brad Fuller. The script for this production is being crafted by Jayson Rothwell.

Toru Nakahara, who has been instrumental in creating the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Golden Axe, will also serve as a producer on this project. On the other hand, Shuji Utsumi, Sega’s president and COO, will be supervising the endeavor.

What Is OutRun?

First introduced in arcades back in 1986, “OutRun” gained fame for its exhilarating racing mechanics, multiple route options, and iconic electronic soundtrack. It significantly influenced the development of driving games. Throughout the years, various versions and sequels of “OutRun” have been released on home consoles.

Details about the plot of the movie remain under wraps. But given that Michael Bay is involved, you can bet on fast-paced action sequences and spectacular explosions.

Universal’s Game Plan

Previously, Universal has achieved significant triumphs with their video game adaptations. For instance, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” generated a staggering $1.4 billion globally, while “Five Nights at Freddy’s” grossed close to $300 million. The upcoming project, “OutRun,” is poised to capitalize on the ongoing gaming craze, particularly with notable personalities like Sydney Sweeney and Michael Bay involved.

Sydney Sweeney behind the camera

As a fan, I can’t help but marvel at Sydney Sweeney’s versatility in the entertainment industry. Beyond her captivating performances in series like “Euphoria” and “Anybody But You,” she’s also stepped behind the scenes as a producer for shows like “Anybody But You” and the horror movie “Immaculate.” Notably, she’s also producing the upcoming Christy Martin biopic and the series “Scandalous!” Additionally, she’s serving as an executive producer on “The Housemaid.

Michael Bay returns to direct

After directing the Transformers films, Michael Bay took on the director’s chair for Ambulance featuring Jake Gyllenhaal. Additionally, he directed the Born Evil: The Serial Killer and the Savior television series on Discovery+, as well as the We Are Storror extreme sports documentary. Most recently, he was responsible for the U.S. Secret Service’s Super Bowl advertisement.
