Police procedurals, filled with the gritty realities of crime, drugs, and drama, continue to captivate audiences, it seems. In the late ’80s, a show called Miami Vice (1984-1989) emerged, offering a unique twist on the procedural genre by immersing it in pop culture and eye-catching visuals. Though it didn’t last as long as others, it did inspire a 2006 film adaptation. Now, a fresh take on Miami Vice is in development with Universal, with the director of Top Gun: Maverick, Joseph Kosinski, at the helm.
Based on reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Gilroy is set to write the script for an upcoming movie. Notably, Gilroy is the brother of Tony Gilroy (Andor), who has extensive experience in the action genre. His past works include “Nightcrawler” and “The Bourne Legacy,” starring Matt Damon. At this point, details about the film’s cast are scarce, as production is still in its early stages. The 2006 movie by Michael Mann featured Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in prominent roles.
In essence, it appears that the upcoming Miami Vice movie might feature two fresh protagonists, given the likelihood of previous cast members not reprising their roles. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s been quite active lately, could potentially join the cast. As for the setting, the film may either be set in the ’80s, like the original series, or in contemporary times, though a period piece paying tribute to the TV show would add an interesting twist.
