Mia Goth recently discussed her involvement in the upcoming Marvel film Blade, which has faced some production challenges, and shared what she knows about the movie’s current status.
I was listening to an interview with Jenna Ortega – sorry, Goth! – and she was talking about ‘Beetlejuice 2’. It’s funny, even though she’s playing the villain, Lilith, she honestly has no clue what’s happening with the movie. She said, and I quote, ‘I mean, I don’t know what’s going on with that. I think that they want to make it,’ which is… a little unsettling, if you ask me! It sounds like everyone’s keeping their cards close to their chest.
They consider this film very important and are being careful with its development. I don’t have any updates on its progress, nor do I know the reason for the delay. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Goth talked about how she first got involved with the project, mentioning she auditioned and even did costume and wig fittings. She flew to Atlanta to do a chemistry test with Mahershala Ali and was really enthusiastic about the direction the project was taking. She described the experience as ‘very cool’.
She complimented Mahershala Ali’s performance, noting he brought a unique and compelling perspective to the role. However, she added that things unfortunately didn’t progress well after that initial strong start.
The new Blade movie has been in the works for a while now, with a difficult path to the screen. After the original Blade trilogy finished in 2004, Marvel Studios got the rights back in 2011 and started planning a fresh take on the story.
Mahershala Ali, famous for playing Cornell Stokes in the series Luke Cage, publicly said he wanted to play Blade in 2019. Marvel confirmed he’d take the lead role at San Diego Comic-Con later that year. He also did a short, uncredited voice cameo in the 2021 film Eternals.
The movie faced a lot of behind-the-scenes challenges, including changes in directors – Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were both considered – and several postponements. By the middle of 2024, Eric Pearson was revising the screenplay as Marvel looked for someone to direct. Though it was taken off the release calendar in October 2024, Marvel has stated the film is still being made, and Mahershala Ali remains attached to star.
