As a long-time admirer of Mia Farrow’s exceptional talent and unwavering activism, I find myself both intrigued and moved by her recent interview with CBS. Her grace and understanding in the face of such tumultuous events is truly commendable. It’s a testament to her compassion and maturity that she can separate the artist from the man, acknowledging an actor’s choice to work with Woody Allen without judgment.
Mia Farrow expresses no resentment towards actors who decide to work with Woody Allen, her former partner. In a recent interview, the actress and activist, aged 79, stated that she wouldn’t discourage these actors from collaborating with the filmmaker, whom she was in a relationship with between 1980 and 1992. After their relationship ended, Allen started dating Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. The couple married in 1997 and have two daughters together. Allen has also faced accusations of sexual abuse by another one of Farrow’s daughters, Dylan Farrow.
Allen was never formally charged.
On September 1st, Sunday, during an interview with journalist Seth Doane of CBS, Farrow was asked if she could separate her acting experiences in films made with Allen while they were in a relationship from the personal hardships that ensued later. Without hesitation, Farrow replied, “Absolutely, absolutely.”
“The actress from Rosemary’s Baby also made it clear that she wouldn’t judge an actor for choosing to collaborate with him. She simply isn’t the type to say such a thing as ‘They absolutely should not.'”
Among Allen’s vocal advocates throughout the years are figures such as Diane Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law, Bill Maher, Cate Blanchett, Jim Belushi, Juno Temple, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Caine, and others who have publicly supported him.
A group of actors including Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Greta Gerwig, Evan Rachel Wood, Rachel Brosnahan, Natalie Portman, Freida Pinto, Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, among others, have pledged not to collaborate with a four-time Academy Award winner again.
In the year 2019, when Allen’s final U.S. film, titled “A Rainy Day in New York”, was released, it coincided with the rise of the #MeToo movement. As a result, stars like Selena Gomez, Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Hall, Griffin Newman, and Elle Fanning chose to donate their earnings from the movie to charities concentrating on preventing sexual assault and offering aid to survivors.
Reflecting on my recent venture last year, I found myself in the heart of France, taking the reins for my 50th feature film, Coupe de Chance. Although the film garnered positive feedback from critics, it managed to generate only $7.4M at the global box office.
In the upcoming Broadway play, “The Roommate,” Farrow takes on the role of a character who befriends a New York resident (played by Patti LuPone). This one-act comedy is currently in previews and will officially open at the Booth Theater in Manhattan on September 12. Tickets for the show are now available for purchase.
If you find yourself in a situation where you require emotional assistance regarding sexual misconduct or if you know someone who is experiencing such difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact your local mental health professional, non-governmental organization, or confide in someone about it. There are numerous helplines available that can provide aid in this matter.
