Through the show’s Instagram account, I received the thrilling news about our upcoming cast addition. They unveiled a captivating headshot of Carragher, captioned with, “Get to know our ‘girl on fire.’” Shortly following, they released a video of her in rehearsals, showcasing her impressive focus and dexterity with a crossbow. The anticipation surrounding her casting has been escalating rapidly, given the iconic nature of this character.

In an interview with Variety, Carragher expressed her enthusiasm about securing the role as Katniss: “I’m genuinely thrilled to portray Katniss. I find a lot of similarities between us,” she shared. Her acting background provides a strong foundation for this part, having attended the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in the UK and later trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in the US. Additionally, her last name may ring a bell to some, as she is the daughter of renowned former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher.

The production of this play is under the guidance of Matthew Dunster, who previously directed the hit stage thriller titled “2:22 – A Ghost Story“. The script originates from Conor McPherson, a celebrated playwright with numerous accolades, who adapted the narrative from Suzanne Collins’ original “Hunger Games” book, which kick-started the hugely successful trilogy that later became a blockbuster film franchise.

Lovers of the novels and movies will be familiar with Katniss as the courageous teenage character who emerges as the symbol of a revolution in a bleak society. Playing this role on stage is no small feat, but Carragher appears up to the task.

This stage adaptation is expected to offer something fresh, even for dedicated fans. Combining compelling narrative, familiar storyline from a beloved source, and an up-and-coming actress as the main character, The Hunger Games: On Stage is poised to make a significant impact on London’s theatre landscape this fall.
