Meta Removes Fact-Checking From Facebook and Instagram, Shifts to Community Notes

Navigating the internet can feel like exploring an untamed terrain at times, there’s no disputing that fact. It offers a platform for extraordinary creativity, allowing even the most peculiar visions to materialize. However, distinguishing truth from fabrication in this digital realm has become quite a challenge. And things are about to get a bit more complicated. In line with Elon Musk’s Twitter (if it were ever to be named X, now could be the time), Meta has declared that they will scrap their fact-checking mechanisms from Facebook and Instagram, instead opting for Community Notes as a replacement.

As stated by Mark Zuckerberg, the complex fact-checking system employed by Facebook, involving third-party independents, was found to have made excessive errors, imposed excessive censorship, and demonstrated a significant political bias.

Over the next few months, the Community Notes system is set to gradually roll out across the United States as Meta phases out its fact-checking process. In this transition, you’ll notice changes such as the elimination of our fact-checking control, no longer demoting fact-checked content, and instead of displaying full-screen warnings before posts, we will use a less intrusive label providing additional information for those interested. It is important to note that these notes will be contributed by the community rather than independent experts.

Noteworthy is a post by Joel Kaplan, Global Affairs Chief at Meta, mentioning that alongside updates on fact-checking, Meta plans to remove several limitations on topics such as immigration, gender identity, and gender – subjects often at the forefront of political discussions and debates. Furthermore, Meta’s safety and content moderation departments will relocate from California to Texas, a move echoing Elon Musk’s decision to transfer Twitter’s headquarters to the same state.
