At this season, it’s time to unleash our inner Miranda Priestly and share our personal thoughts on what celebrities chose to wear at the Met Gala. Yet, just as before, we remain curious about the symbolic meanings behind their outfits, accessories, or menu selections.
Discussing the food, it’s crucial that its preparation for the event reflects the same level of care and creativity that designers invest when designing an outfit. For instance, at the Met Gala 2025, Chef Kwame Onwuachi was responsible for preparing a meal worthy of the guests in attendance.
In my perspective, recounting the chef’s life narrative feels more like a testament of inspiration rather than an ordinary story. This culinary maestro has certainly encountered numerous challenges throughout his life, and the path that led him to the esteemed Met Gala event was nothing short of arduous.
Kwame has experienced poverty firsthand. At a point in his life, it’s said that he sold candy on subways and trains to save money. Eventually, his efforts resulted in him opening Shaw Bijou. Unfortunately, the business had to shut down after just a few months, according to NBC Washington.
However, his achievements didn’t end at that point. This talented chef expanded his culinary empire by launching a second venue named Kith/Kin, which eventually earned him the prestigious James Beard award. In addition to this, he showcased his exceptional skills in crafting diverse dishes on the popular TV show Top Chef, where he truly excelled.
Afterward, it’s said that he not only opened Tatiana but also established a new eatery named Dogon. Indeed, he is causing quite a stir in the culinary world. This year, Kwame even found himself on Time magazine’s prestigious list of 100 Most Influential People.
For those unfamiliar, the Met Gala 2025’s theme is “Supefine: Tailoring Black Style.” It appears that the cuisine offered at this fashion event takes inspiration directly from the theme.
Kwame shared with BET, “I aimed to develop a dish that would emphasize the theme and be delightful too,” further explaining, “I wanted to truly embody Black culture in all its aspects – from the diaspora to the Caribbean, the American South, and even the boroughs of New York.” The chef also conveyed this sentiment to the media outlet.
