‘Melania’ Rotten Tomatoes Score is Revealed – Critics Are Merciless

A new mockumentary called Melania recently premiered to negative reviews. The film, co-produced and directed by Brett Ratner, portrays Melania Trump during the twenty days before Donald Trump’s second inauguration.

The film has received very negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 7% approval rating from critics, based on 15 reviews, and Metacritic gives it a score of 6 out of 100, signaling widespread disapproval.

The film Melania started being made immediately after the 2024 election and quickly gained interest from many large film studios. Amazon secured the rights for $40 million, with plans to release it in theaters and create a follow-up documentary series. What made this project different was that Melania Trump maintained control over the film’s content and was actively involved in its creation. This is Brett Ratner’s first project since he was accused of s misconduct by multiple people.

The documentary has received largely negative reviews. Julie Cohen, the co-director of films like RBG and My Name Is Pauli Murray, told The Guardian the film lacks artistic and journalistic merit due to Donald Trump’s involvement. Owen Gleiberman of Variety described it as a blatant advertisement, drawing comparisons to propaganda from 1960s China. Xan Brooks, also writing for The Guardian, criticized the film’s slow pace and called it a flashy but ultimately worthless remake of The Zone of Interest (2023).

Other critics were equally critical. Nick Hilton, writing for The Independent, compared the film to historically controversial works like The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Triumph of the Will (1935), calling it shallow and arguing that it doesn’t offer much understanding of Donald Trump as a person.

Critics have pointed out several flaws in the film. Sophie Gilbert of The Atlantic found it lacking in both action and meaningful content. Brian Truitt of USA Today observed an emotional distance, noting Melania Trump never engages directly with the audience and doesn’t visibly react to events like the California wildfires. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter was critical of the film’s soundtrack, which he found jarring, citing songs with themes of war, power, and male dominance, including tracks like “Gimme Shelter” and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

Honestly, it’s a shame how this film is being received. It had a huge budget, and there were a lot of creative hands involved, but the director’s past controversies seem to be overshadowing everything. Despite all the big names attached and that massive deal with Amazon, most critics are saying it feels more like a long advertisement than a genuine, insightful documentary. It’s frustrating to see so much potential fall flat because of these issues.
