MCU’s Nova Reportedly Has Open Casting: Richard Rider Role Could Go to a POC

Marvel Studios continues to develop numerous upcoming ventures featuring both well-loved and lesser-known comic book heroes. Despite their pledge to reduce the number of annual film and series releases, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and team remain brimming with fresh concepts.

The project titled ‘Nova’ has undergone several transformations over time. Initially conceived as a TV show, it was later reimagined as a film, but recent developments suggest that it could potentially return to its television roots once again.

Six months ago, I learned from Marvel’s television chief that a ‘Nova’ live-action series is under development. Yet, it’s important to remember that although work has started, it’s not guaranteed that this project will actually come to fruition, given the studio’s recent guidelines.

Winderbaum shared some news on the ‘Nova’ program, noting it has advanced beyond the “initial development” phase and is showing promising progress. He added that although it’s still being developed, the show holds a great deal of promise, particularly with its distinctive style and ambiance, which he referred to as having a “very hip” feel.

There’s still not much information available about the upcoming show, including its storyline and which character from Nova we might see in the spotlight. Some speculate it could be Richard Rider, while others think it may center around Sam Alexander. Notably, industry insider Daniel Richtman has hinted on his Patreon that the casting call is open to actors of any ethnic background.

In other words, this position isn’t limited to only white actors, and it might even go to someone of color (POC). This is intriguing since Marvel Comics already features a POC Nova character named Sam Alexander in their comics.

Alongside the announcement about the cast, the recent news also reveals that the show’s antagonist could be Annihilus, a potent character from the comics who led the Annihilation Wave that demolished the Nova Corps. This implies significant conflicts and a strong tie to Nova’s comic book origins.
