MCU Star Daniel Brühl Remembers Robert Downey Jr.’s Invitation to His “Village”

As a devoted fan of Daniel Brühl and his enchanting portrayal of Helmut Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must say that his recollection of his off-screen bond with Robert Downey Jr. is nothing short of captivating. The image of Brühl being invited to Downey’s “village” during the filming of Captain America: Civil War is a tale that has added an endearing layer to their on-screen rivalry, making me even more eager for their future interactions in the MCU.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daniel Brühl portrays Helmut Zemo. He debuts as the principal antagonist in the movie “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). Zemo, once a member of Sokovia’s special forces, embarks on a path of vengeance against the Avengers, having lost his family during the occurrences depicted in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015).

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Brühl’s character, Zemo, is well-known for his intricate villainy. He resumed his role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), where we see a shift in Zemo as he embarks on a path towards redemption, evolving into an anti-hero.

The actor recently spoke with GamesRadar+ to promote his new show, The Franchise, and shared an intriguing, lesser-known detail about his off-screen relationship with Robert Downey Jr. This memorable moment occurred while filming Civil War, and it’s something Brühl will cherish for life.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that my antics somehow managed to make RDJ erupt in such uncontrollable laughter that he extended an invitation to his mysterious “village” to me. During the filming process, it turns out that RDJ didn’t just release one trailer, but rather built an entire “village” for the project.

In this sprawling park, I arrived feeling much like the fresh face on the first day at school. It brought back memories of my childhood days. My initial scene with Downey Jr. still stands out – he found one of my jokes hilarious and continued to laugh endlessly. His response was, “You’re quite funny, do you have any allergies?” I replied, rather puzzled, “Allergies?

In the afternoon, while I was peacefully enjoying a burrito for lunch in my trailer, someone came to inform me that I had been cordially invited to Robert Downey Jr.’s private community for a meal. I was taken aback, set aside my burrito, and was transported there. Upon arrival, I found a large gate and a security guard. He warmly welcomed me, presented me with a gift, and I felt like I was witnessing a special, intimate moment. I must admit, I was utterly starstruck.

It’s been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will reappear in the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film, this time portraying Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man. Fans can’t wait to witness another encounter between Downey and Brühl in this new role.

Despite some ambiguity regarding his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) moving forward, Brühl has been tight-lipped about the matter. When queried about a possible appearance in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” film, which promises the comeback of several iconic villains, he was rather secretive about the details.

Y: So you’re still in with them? Does that mean you will make a cameo in Thunderbolts*?

DB: [laughs] Next question.
