MCU Phases 4 and 5: These 15 Loose Ends Prove They Were Kind of a Mess

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity as we delve into the potential storylines that could unfold in the near future. From Hercules’ impending encounter with Thor to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s enigmatic recruitment tactics, there are plenty of intriguing threads waiting to be unraveled.

At the moment, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in the heart of Phase 5, which is turning out to be a part of the larger Multiverse Storyline. Currently, things are somewhat tangled due to the arrival of Kang the Conqueror as the main antagonist, and there’s a possibility that his plot might have to be swiftly resolved. Meanwhile, it seems Doctor Doom needs to be effectively established for the bigger picture to stay coherent.

Due to several unanswered questions and inconsistencies left by Phase 4, numerous projects have been initiated to address these issues. As it stands, many aspects from this phase seem confusing to fans. Here’s a look at the most obvious plot threads that were left hanging, so let’s explore them further.

What’s up with Celestials and Eternals?

The film “Eternals” represented a pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), offering a complex and far-reaching narrative filled with grandiose characters. However, this intriguing storyline seems to have been set aside after its initial introduction. The Celestials were outraged when the Eternals transformed Tiamut into marble, halting its complete formation and potentially averting Earth’s destruction. In the finale of “Eternals”, Arishem, the Supreme Celestial, took Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos away to scrutinize their memories and determine mankind’s future. Unfortunately, this particular plot thread was not continued in subsequent films.

Kevin Feige has stated that there are currently no plans for Eternals 2, but remnants of Tiamut were hinted at in She-Hulk. However, it’s possible that this storyline could be revisited in Captain America: Brave New World, as the Celestials, the creators of adamantium, are confirmed to play a role there. The trailer suggests that Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Sam Wilson (Falcon) fly near a Celestial corpse.

What’s Skaar’s deal?

In the series ‘She-Hulk’, Skaar made his debut, yet his mother’s identity and the specifics of his birth remain unexplored, leaving viewers curious about the potential ramifications of the Hulk fathering a son within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s possible that these unanswered questions could be addressed in ‘The Young Avengers’. Given Skaar’s connection to the Hulk, he might step into the role as a potential successor for the Hulk in the future of the MCU.

Where’s White Vision?

In the thrilling conclusion of ‘WandaVision’, I found myself captivated by the emergence of a fresh take on Vision, christened White Vision, engineered by S.W.O.R.D. My beloved Vision endeavored to resurrect White Vision’s lost memories using the Mind Stone embedded in his brow. This set off an intriguing discussion about the essence of who truly is Vision. In the end, White Vision reclaimed his memories and departed without a word, leaving his destiny hanging in the balance.

Despite plans for a standalone series featuring White Vision, some fans seem unenthusiastic about the character due to feelings that it’s been too long since his last appearance on screen.

Sharon Carter

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that Sharon Carter’s transformation into a villain in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ didn’t exactly take me by surprise. After all, her life took a drastic turn following her assistance to Steve Rogers, James Buchanan Barnes (Bucky), and Samuel Wilson (Falcon). The feeling of betrayal she experienced at the hands of the government is palpable, but I can’t help but wonder about the deeper reasons behind her actions.

What or who are Ten Rings calling?

Towards the end of the film, Danvers, Banner, and Shang-Chi have a conversation about the mysterious rings. Danvers pointed out that the technology in these rings was unlike any alien tech she had previously encountered. Meanwhile, Banner observed that they were far older than the thousand-year-old rings Xu Wenwu had been using, and they weren’t made of vibranium. Eventually, Wong disclosed that the rings were emitting an unknown signal and broadcasting a beacon.

In simpler terms, he made it clear that this wasn’t written down in their Codex, and he cautioned Shang-Chi and Katy that their lives had been forever altered. So far, the storyline regarding these mysterious rings hasn’t been explained, and we don’t know who or what they belong to. But, since it was recently confirmed that ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is being made, this enigma may be unraveled in future events.

What’s the purpose of introducing Starfox now?

In the extra scene after the credits of ‘Eternals’, we saw Starfox, played by Harry Styles, make his entrance. This left viewers confused since Starfox’s tale is deeply connected to Thanos, who is no longer present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This ambiguity has sparked questions about Thanos’ origin, as his backstory in the movies deviates from his comic book portrayal where he is half-Eternal. As of now, ‘Eternals 2’ hasn’t been announced yet, so we don’t know when these plot points will be addressed.

What happens to Moon Knight?

Initially, ‘Moon Knight’ was planned as a short-run series with few prospects for a follow-up. However, the character’s popularity among fans soared, and the finale hinted at exciting possibilities for future storylines. Although there’s no definite date for Moon Knight’s return, whispers suggest he might feature in an intriguing new undertaking titled ‘The Midnight Sons.’

Clea needs Strange’s help with what?

Hey there, I’m stepping into the shoes of a dedicated gamer, and let me tell you about an exciting development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! It’s like this: In the world of gaming, I’ve just encountered a character – call her Clea, a sorceress from the Dark Dimension, who happens to be Dormammu’s niece. She’s suddenly materialized on Earth, seeking Doctor Strange’s aid, though the specifics of her mission remain hazy.

Hercules in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Hercules, son of Zeus, was once assigned by his father a mission: pursuing and eliminating Thor, following an encounter between Thor and his group against the Council of Deities at Omnipotence City. Since that event, there’s been no further information about this character. However, it appears that this narrative may be revisited in ‘Thor 5,’ a film currently being developed. Interestingly, Taika Waititi will not be back to direct the upcoming movie.

Why is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine recruiting people?

In the shows ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and ‘Black Widow’, character Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has been on a recruitment spree. In ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, she gave a fresh identity to the disgraced Captain America, John Walker, as U.S. Agent. On the other hand, in ‘Black Widow’, she was seen as Yelena Belova’s superior, who was already working under her. It appears that Valentina is not forming a typical Avengers-style team but instead gathering individuals with flexible moral compasses, operating within the murky waters of geopolitics rather than adhering to traditional values.

In the gaming world of ‘Thunderbolts’ next year, I, as Valentina, am eagerly anticipating the chance to step into the limelight. My character will be shaped by secrets I harbor, my own hidden agendas that promise to add depth and intrigue to the narrative.

Black Knight and Ebony Blade were quickly forgotten

In ‘The Eternals’, there’s a rich tapestry of stories yet to be fully unfolded. A character named Dane Whitman, portrayed by Kit Harington, made an appearance and his last scene centered around the Ebony Blade and Blade. Harington has expressed uncertainty about his future role, but speculations point towards either the ‘Blade’ reboot or the ‘Midnight Sons’ project. Given that the Ebony Blade plays a significant part in the upcoming ‘Blade’ movie, it seems more likely that we might see Harington again there.

What’s the deal with the Venom symbiote in the MCU?

In the bonus scene following ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ Venom introduces Eddie to different realms, including one where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man resides. Later, in the post-credit sequence of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ Eddie is sent back to his own world, leaving a bit of symbiote residue behind. This detail is hinted at in the teaser for ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ but it still leaves some questions unanswered.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m pumped about the ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ trailer! It looks like the guy from Spider-Man: No Way Home’s bar (yep, that’d be Cristóbal Fernández) is about to get his hands on the symbiote, but just as he touches it, Chiwetel Ejiofor swoops in. From what I gather, Ejiofor plays a military commander working for an organization studying symbiotes. His team seems pretty impressive; they’ve got interdimensional travel up their sleeves! They‘re chasing Eddie and Venom, which is quite intriguing.

The Sokovia Accords are repealed, how did this happen?

The Sokovia Accords caused a significant division among the Avengers, as Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) clashed over the direction of superheroes. Given the destruction from the Snap, the world’s condition during the five-year gap, and the turmoil after the Blip, it makes sense that the Accords might be discarded, especially since the Avengers were disbanded. Nevertheless, the exact moment and motivation behind their revocation are shrouded in mystery. Although She-Hulk has verified that the Sokovia Accords have been rescinded, the specifics of how, when, and why this occurred still remain uncertain.

Skrulls had a planet all along, but now they lost it again?!?

In ‘Secret Invasion,’ one of the latest letdowns from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Skrulls created a great deal of turmoil. However, the aftermath and resolution of the invasion remain unknown. All we know is that Captain Marvel was cognizant of their home planet, Tarnax, which met its end during ‘The Marvels.’ As a result, the storyline remains unfinished without a clear resolution in sight.

What happened to G’iah, and why wasn’t she involved with Rambeau, Khan, and Danvers?

In ‘The Marvels,’ Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan uncover that their abilities overlap, leading them to swap positions whenever they activate their powers concurrently. The movie proposes that this link stems from their light-based powers sharing a common origin. However, this raises questions since Emilia Clarke’s character, G’iah, in the ‘Secret Invasion’ finale received DNA enhancements from several significant Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters, including Captain Marvel. One might expect that this enhancement would tie her to Danvers, Rambeau, and Khan; yet, she is not referenced in the Phase 5 film, despite it being promoted as a follow-up to ‘Secret Invasion.’

It’s unclear when G’iah will next appear, but it is likely to be during major crossover events.
