With so many films and shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s common for characters to disappear for a while. Occasionally, they reappear after years with a brief explanation, but often they’re never seen again, leaving fans to speculate about their fate based on limited clues.
This list highlights characters who left the Marvel Cinematic Universe without a definitive on-screen ending. For each one, we’ll look at their last appearance, what happened at that time, and any updates (or lack thereof) from Marvel since. It’s a handy way to keep track of unresolved storylines and lingering questions.
Betty Ross
As a big fan, it always bothered me how Betty Ross was treated after ‘The Incredible Hulk’. She was so important to Bruce Banner, really the heart of his story, but the movie just… left her hanging. We never saw what happened to her after the Harlem disaster, and it felt like the MCU completely forgot about her for years. Bruce got mentioned in other films, sure, but they never bothered to explain what became of Betty, which was a real shame considering how much she meant to his character.
She disappeared during several large-scale events, similar to those involving the Avengers, without any explanation within the story itself – not even a quick message or appearance. This sudden departure left a significant character from the Hulk’s past unresolved, leaving fans without a proper conclusion to her story for years.
Samuel Sterns
In ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ Sterns acts as Bruce Banner’s scientific advisor, and the movie hints that he’ll eventually become the Leader. The ending shows Sterns changed after being exposed to Banner’s blood, but this development isn’t explored in any subsequent movies or shows, leaving his fate and condition uncertain.
For a while, the story simply drops off on this character – there’s no mention of S.H.I.E.L.D. holding him, no updates on what he’s doing, and no development of the changes that were suggested. The Marvel Cinematic Universe sets up his story but doesn’t follow through with it, leaving it unresolved.
Dr. Leonard Samson
Dr. Samson appears in ‘The Incredible Hulk’ as a psychiatrist and friend to Betty Ross. Being a character well-known from the comics, he initially seemed likely to play a larger role in Bruce Banner’s story. However, after the events in New York, he doesn’t appear in any other Marvel movies or TV shows.
The story doesn’t mention what happened to him professionally, his feelings about the Hulk, or his life following the events in Harlem. He’s just gone, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t offer any in-universe reason for his disappearance.
Justin Hammer
Justin Hammer first appears in ‘Iron Man 2’ as a competitor to Tony Stark, with a powerful defense company and strong political ties. Though he’s arrested by the end of the film, his wealth and connections hint he could return. However, he remains absent for several movies, never capitalizing on technological advancements or worldwide events.
The films don’t explain what happens to him legally, ignore his involvement in future weapons development, and don’t show him participating in any changes to the government. His vanishing creates a significant void in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s world of business and technology.
Erik Selvig
Selvig is an important scientist in both ‘Thor’ and ‘The Avengers’, and he reappears in ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. However, the Asgardian storyline continues in later films without him, and it’s never explained whether he stopped working in the field or simply continued his research privately.
The story doesn’t explain what happened to his work as a professor, his connection to S.H.I.E.L.D. or any organizations that followed it, or his partnerships with scientists like Banner. His disappearance from these activities isn’t addressed for quite some time.
Lady Sif
Sif played a key role in the first two ‘Thor’ movies and made a quick appearance in a TV show. However, when ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ introduced a new direction for the series, Sif wasn’t included, and the movie doesn’t explain what happened to her. This is especially noticeable because her fellow warriors, the Warriors Three, *are* shown in the film, while she is not.
The story doesn’t say where she was located or if she was even on Earth when Asgard fell. It simply continues without explaining how such a skilled warrior wasn’t present during the destruction of her home.
The Grandmaster
In ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ the Grandmaster governs the planet Sakaar, but a rebellion ultimately overthrows him. While the end credits hint he might have survived, the movie doesn’t explain what happened to him after that—whether he was imprisoned, exiled, or simply lost power. He doesn’t appear in any subsequent Marvel cosmic adventures.
I’ve always wondered what happened to him after the movie ended! Does he ever get back to making games, or does everything he built fall apart? It’s strange – for someone who’s connected to the whole universe, the story just leaves us hanging about what becomes of him. We never find out what he does next, and that’s a little frustrating as a fan!
The Collector
In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ the Collector showcases his impressive collection of rare items, including an Infinity Stone in his museum. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ implies Thanos stole the stone from him, but this happens through a deceptive illusion, leaving the Collector’s ultimate fate uncertain. The movies never revisit what happened to him after that event.
We never find out what happened to his collection, if he escaped, or if he was hurt. His story ends without resolution, and the movies don’t offer a clear answer.
Baron Mordo
In ‘Doctor Strange,’ Mordo learns magic with Stephen Strange, and a post-credits scene hints at his future as an enemy of sorcerers. However, the main story doesn’t show what he does after that, or how he becomes a villain. While a version of Mordo appears in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ it doesn’t explain what happened to the original Mordo and why he turned against other magic users.
Honestly, I’m really frustrated because we don’t *see* what he’s actually doing with his newfound abilities. The story just… leaves him. We don’t get to witness him pursuing his goals, or how he’s getting stronger, and there’s absolutely no follow-up with the Masters of the Mystic Arts after he changes sides. It feels like they just put him aside with everything unresolved.
Ghost
In ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ Ava Starr has a unique ability to phase through objects, but it requires a specific, hard-to-find energy source to maintain. The movie concludes with a strategy to use quantum energy to fix her condition. However, the sudden events of the Blip disrupt this plan, and subsequent films don’t explain how Ava manages her phasing or if she ever finds a permanent solution during the five-year gap.
After the events in San Francisco, it’s unknown what happened to her legally, her relationship with Bill Foster, or if she continued working with any organization. The films don’t show what became of her or if she received any help in the years that followed.
Nakia
Nakia plays an important role in ‘Black Panther,’ particularly in Wakanda’s efforts to connect with the outside world. It’s surprising that she doesn’t appear in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and the movie never explains what she was doing during the battle. Her absence isn’t even mentioned as the story unfolds.
It’s currently unknown if she was on a mission overseas or operating independently of Wakanda when she vanished. The reason for her disappearance during the global crisis remains a mystery until her backstory is revealed.
Mac Gargan
Vulture, also known as Adrian Toomes, first appeared in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ with a post-credits scene hinting at his return for future battles. He ended that film with a clear reason to seek revenge and connections that posed a danger to Peter Parker. However, he hasn’t been featured in any of the following Spider-Man movies.
The films offer no clues about what happens to him after the school years – no mentions of arrests, parole, or any suspicious activity. He just disappears from the story without any on-screen explanation.
Helen Cho
In ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ Dr. Cho introduces advanced medical technology and directly helps create Vision’s physical form. However, after the battle, the movies don’t show her continuing to work with the Avengers or any related teams. Her lab’s fate and future research are also never explained.
I was really left wondering about her after that – there’s absolutely nothing about what happened to her, or if she even recovered. It’s frustrating that the story just drops her without telling us anything about how her incredible work with the Cradle technology was handled, or if anyone even tried to support or protect it. It feels like a huge missed opportunity to explore the implications of her discovery and what happened to the person who made it all possible.
President Matthew Ellis
In ‘Iron Man 3,’ Ellis is the President of the United States and works with the Avengers during a time of crisis. However, the movies don’t mention him again when discussing later political changes, agreements, or new leaders. The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t explain how long he served as president or who took over after him.
Okay, so this president… we never really got a clear picture of where he stood on things like superheroes, and honestly, the government’s handling of alien stuff was a mystery. Now that he’s just… gone? It leaves a huge hole in how the Marvel Cinematic Universe explains its world, especially on the federal side of things. It’s like a major piece of the puzzle vanished, and we’re left wondering what was really going on behind the scenes.
Sharon Carter
Sharon Carter plays a significant role in both ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ aiding Captain America’s team. Following these events, she disappears, and the movies don’t initially reveal her whereabouts or how she survives while being a fugitive. Subsequent films don’t provide any updates on her situation for a while.
There’s no immediate explanation for how she survived, like a deal made through extradition, a pardon, or a new alliance. The story leaves her missing for quite a while before eventually revealing what happened to her.
